Jara and Kast Advance to December Runoff in Chile’s Tight Presidential Race

Chile’s ruling-coalition candidate, Jeannette Jara, and Republican Party contender José Antonio Kast will face off in a presidential runoff on December 14, after leading Sunday’s vote with 26.58% and 24.32% respectively.

The outcome was largely expected: polls in recent days had already identified both politicians as the frontrunners, though the narrow gap between them was tighter than many of the latest projections suggested.

Jara, a member of the Communist Party, celebrated the results despite not being enough to secure an outright win. “Our country has a future, and it lies in our girls and boys,” she said, expressing confidence heading into December. Additionally, she urged supporters to stay engaged: “Democracy must be protected and valued. It took us a lot to win it back, and today it can’t be put at risk. We must remember who we are as a country: big, beautiful, supportive — full of hope.”

Kast, speaking from the Republican Party headquarters, also rallied his base, calling for a renewed push to “move the country forward,” especially after the administration of President Gabriel Boric. “What we need is unity — unity to recover our nation in security, the economy, health care, housing, and education. This election has been a moment to say ‘enough’ to the current government,” he pointed shortly after early results came in. He welcomed the preliminary tallies, adding that “the total votes we received show the magnitude of this challenge and mark a turning point after a government that promised reforms and failed to deliver.”

President Boric also addressed the nation Sunday night, appealing for “dialogue, respect, and love for Chile” as voters look ahead to choosing the country’s next leader. He praised the “strength, reliability, and effective operation” of Chile’s electoral system, adding that the country has “a healthy, robust democracy that we must safeguard every day.”

One of the night’s biggest surprises came from Franco Parisi, leader of the People’s Party (PDG), who captured 18.84% of the vote — particularly strong in mining regions in the north. Buoyed by his showing, Parisi signaled he is open to supporting either finalist, but only in exchange for concrete commitments, including eliminating taxes on medicines and cutting politicians’ salaries. “We’re ready to truly help whoever becomes the next president,” he said. “But I don’t sign blank checks. The candidates need to earn these votes — I need gestures from them.”

On the other hand, libertarian candidate Johannes Kaiser, who finished fourth with 13.92%, confirmed that he will back Kast in the runoff, confirming what he had previously said: he would support “any candidate except Jara.”

Two Divergent Futures

Chile now faces a stark choice between two sharply different political visions, that will shape the country’s domestic and foreign policy in the coming years.

Jara is widely seen as a strong voice for social mobility and grassroots-driven reform, emphasizing everyday working-class struggles. Much of her support comes from social sectors that view her as relatable — someone who understands firsthand the realities they face.

Kast, for his part, runs on a conservative platform centered on institutional authority and traditional values. He opposes abortion rights and same-sex marriage, and his campaign stresses tougher security measures, expanded police powers, and tighter immigration rules — including the deportation of undocumented migrants, a stance reminiscent of Donald Trump’s policies in the United States.
