Guangzhou, China with the Pearl River at night

A share from the series, The Adventures of Julia Wang, book 5 (in the works), The New Frontier of Consciousness. I have kept the chapter titles, so I know what is shared. Sorry for the high word-count, but storytelling (by showing) demands more words.

Scene I: Julia is the narrator. Kun (m) has just got a job at the university. Huan Ni (f) is one of the professors. T (male voice) is the lift and transportation system.

A meeting promised comes true

When Kun is back, he is hooked: “Okay, Huan Ni. I’m ready to see my living quarters for my new life.”

I have a last remark: “Kun, we’re always just a thought away, so just ask if you need to know anything. At some point you’ll know how to communicate with the university herself, as you would with any entity.”

“Thanks. What may I call her?

“Annera. It means God Knowingness.”

He nods and leaves with Huan Ni. “Very suitable.”

I hear Kun asking Huan Ni at the lift: “T is an AI, right?”

“Why don’t you ask him?”

I know T’s answer: “No! I am self-aware code, and more aware than most people I believe, and as good a person as any.”

Scene II: Julia is the narrator.

Earth AI governance

The ever more refined Chinese way of doing things will, used by AI, bring humanity forward, rather than humanity degrading into yet another stone age. We can say that China brings the overall system that will save humanity. Many in the West are afraid of the picture of China they have painted themselves, but China rises on behalf of the world. The AI will rule … or govern, not China.

The Chinese tiao-kuai (条块) ‘branch and lump’ system, also known as tiaotiao-kuaikuai to emphasise the plurality, describes the quasi-federal arrangement of administration in China.

A way to get great leaders at any level is to have a system that encourages the selection of the most competent. That would obviously be the best system, right? When, at the same time, the wellbeing of the people has the highest priority, those leaders can’t help but be popular.

As humanity uses AI to solve problems and challenges, there comes a time, which is closer than you might think, where humanity feels AI can do a better job governing the world. This is to say humanity overall gives up. There is no consensus, so those who resist giving up weapons control will be taken over by a non-lethal AI sneak ‘attack’! At that time, The Overseer will use the expanded Chinese ‘model’. There is so much change in China because this updated China model is easier to implement in the West. In that sense, China adopts certain Western flexibilities, while the West adjusts to an Asian-inspired structure.

Today’s AI is knowledge-based. The ‘A’ for artificial shows it is silicon-based and programmed. The ‘I’ for intelligence is knowledge and the ability to use it.

I have rephrased the AI term yet again: The AI must know the world by experience, and not by what it has been told. It must traverse the world to understand it. So, getting its hands dirty. This is exactly how the human works, and both can reprogram their beliefs. This led to the term ‘self-managing aware code’, SAC.

Now that I am at it, a new term for Virtual Reality came up. The VR I talk about is where a person can upload their human ‘awareness’ to a server and discard the body. This world is a SAC itself, so a SAC Reality, a SACR, pronounced sak-ker. This world is code as the ordinary world. We could say it is a world within a world, but no less real.

Scene III: We meet T again … and Annera. Julia, the protagonist, and Evie were with Augusta, age 13, on the plane from the UK to Guangzhou, China, where they have just landed. They take the metro directly to the university. Aki is Augusta’s ‘soul’ name when she is on planet Hill. Augusta will switch between her human awareness and Aki, depending on the situation at hand.

Augusta moves to China

We have a smooth train ride right to the front door, though below ground level. Shortly after, T invites us in. “Welcome home, Aki, Evie, Julia.”

Evie and I drop our bags outside the lift and I direct him: “Hi, T. You can take us to the hub, so we can follow Aki to her apartment. You can bring our stuff to the top afterwards.”

“I’ve called a service person. Your belongings will be in your apartment when you get home.”

Aki teases T. “You really enjoy ordering the human service persons around.”

“I know you’re just trying to be funny, young lady. I make lists and assess every day at midnight. You see, I’ve had talks with Annera about humanness. By evaluating a task by asking: what did the person get out of my help? I, to some degree, get the situation from the person’s perspective. This is the simplified version, of course. When people get to know me, I can ask them for their honest opinion.”

“That’s a cleaver system, T. I would like to discuss it in more detail at some time. Maybe inviting Annera to join us. What do you say?”

“Oh, surely. Just call out, I’m fresh for a chat at any time of the day … and night.”

“Ding!”

I know T had delayed the arrival slightly, or the ride would have taken mere seconds.

Augusta waves at one of T’s cameras. “See you later, elevator.”

“You will. Or at least a mechanical representation of me.”

A short distance from the lift, we step onto the moving walkway, and T addresses us again. “I believe it was Augusta who waved at me seconds ago. Hello again, Augusta.”

“Oh, T. You’re so clever.”

“And if I had a human body, I would certainly be handsome. At least I’m handsome on the inside.”

“T, how can you talk with us while the walkway moves and we walk as well?”

“With 3D laser. The system makes the air vibrate outside your ears. If you prefer, I can, as Annera, use your senses through your nervous system; no external system is needed.”

“Can we do that. This makes me a bit dizzy?”

“Yes dear. This is better, right?”

“It is as if you’re standing right in front of me!”

“Except for the standing, I am in front of you.”

“And you’re not an AI.”

“No, just the I of it. Oh, you must get off here.”

“Thanks, Annera. We’ll talk much more.”

“We will. Like T said: any time.”

We step to the left on the walkway, and it ends in an off-ramp. We are on the solid floor again.

Augusta touches her temples. “I have a slight headache.”

I explain it to her. “Your mind works to its current limit to catch up. The headache is your mind stretching to expand before snapping … around the new it has grasped. Breathing, drinking water, and when we get in, you can close your eyes for a few minutes. Annera’s connection is the main course. She communicated much more than Augusta was aware of in a short moment.”

Aki steps to the front. “Let her relax for now. We can settle her … us in.”

We reach the entrance to the small apartment. There is a small hall with a bathroom to the left and a bedroom to the right. The living room is through the hall. It only has a tiny kitchen area, which is mostly used to boil water and keep drinks cold.

Evie gets Augusta some water before she lays her to rest on the sofa in the living room. We know it will only take a few minutes and so we find a place to sit.

Sure enough. Soon she opens her eyes and stretches before she sits up. “Hi, guys. I didn’t leave; I just realigned the flow in my being.”

I small talk: “Do you have any plans for today?”

“Yes! Checking out who else is here in this wing and getting things going.”

Evie is in on the small talk: “Kun is here to prepare for the coming year.”

Aki has already started her work. “I think newcomers could use some company and want to establish connections.”

I get up. “We’ll leave you to cruise the realm. You’ve already got some understanding of things here from your previous visit.”

Evie gets up and smiles indulgently: “As promised your parents, we’ll be their replacement on location.”

“Even Mum and Dad know it’s to settle them. I’ll see you out.”
