We Set Up Sarah’s Airbnb in 6 Weeks… Then the Reviews Exposed What We Missed

The honest step-by-step setup guide that turned “this place is fine” into “this feels like home”.

A while back I shared how I helped my friend Sarah launch her Airbnb in just six weeks before she moved abroad.

We rushed through the legal stuff, photos, and pricing, got the listing live, and thought we were done. But when the first guests checked in and the reviews started coming… we realized we still had work to do.

Most reviews were fine, but a couple of people mentioned they had a hard time finding good spots nearby and finding out how the different appliances work was a hassle.

Then, we realized that we had made the apartment look nice, but we hadn’t made it easy and thoughtful for actual guests.

So we went back and adjusted a few things. Here’s what we did, in simple terms.

How We Set Up the Apartment

First, we got serious about the photos. We re-staged everything with natural light and took new shots. Nothing crazy, just decluttering and making the space feel warm and inviting. Sarah looked at the new photos and said, “Okay, this actually looks good now.”

Then we focused on flow and comfort. We made sure guests could move around easily, added a little coffee and tea station, put warm lighting in the living room, and made the seating area actually comfortable.

The bedroom got extra love. Good bedding, blackout curtains, and a calm vibe. Turns out, people will forgive a lot if they sleep really well.

Kitchen and bathroom became more user-friendly. We added clear instructions for the tricky appliances, stocked basic stuff in the kitchen, and made sure the bathroom had everything a guest might forget — extra towels, toiletries, hairdryer, etc.

And finally, the small touches. We created a simple Welcome Book with local recommendations, left a few snacks for arrival, displayed the WiFi password nicely, and added some fresh flowers. Nothing expensive, but those little things made a big difference.
