Small Dogs Are Not Small Versions of Large Dogs

Most pet food formulations are designed for a generalized adult dog, then adjusted by serving size for smaller breeds. Embedded in that approach is the assumption that nutritional needs scale proportionally with body weight.

They do not.

Dogs under 20 pounds have meaningfully distinct physiological profiles. Their metabolic rate per unit of body weight is higher than that of larger breeds, which changes caloric density requirements in ways a simple portion reduction does not fully address. Their gastrointestinal anatomy differs, influencing nutrient absorption and digestive tolerance. Their nutritional margins are narrower, so formulation errors and ingredient variability carry greater consequences.

These are structural physiological differences. A formulation that does not account for them may still meet adequacy standards, yet remain poorly calibrated for the animal consuming it.

The category has been slow to fully reflect this reality. Broad formulations are economically efficient. A single recipe marketed across the widest possible dog population reduces manufacturing complexity and expands the addressable market. Small-breed specific products exist, though many are differentiated primarily through kibble size or caloric adjustments rather than through fundamental reformulation around small-breed physiology.

The cumulative nature of dietary exposure makes this distinction more consequential over time. A small dog eating the same food twice a day for ten to fifteen years accumulates the effects of every formulation decision across thousands of meals.

Owners are not always aware that the product they are feeding may never have been designed around their dog’s specific physiology. That information gap is part of what PGF exists to narrow.
