What If Rancho Never Existed?

Without one dreamer, would Farhan’s camera gather dust, Raju lose hope, and the system swallow them whole?

Some people walk into your life and tilt the axis, and you don’t even realize how crooked your world was until they straighten it.

But what if that person never came? What if Rancho had never walked into ICE?

Farhan would have kept his secret buried under family expectations. He would have gone on to become an engineer, just another cog in the great machine of middle-class security. His camera would have collected dust in some forgotten corner. The animals he wanted to capture, the wild freedom he longed for, would have stayed in his dreams — silent, waiting, unfed. He would have married the girl his parents picked, lived in a respectable housing society, and written code he never cared about. Maybe, late at night, he’d scroll through photography magazines and wonder what his life could have been if only he had chosen differently. But he wouldn’t. He never would.

Raju would have cracked under the pressure. Without Rancho pulling him back from the ledge, maybe he wouldn’t have survived at all. His world was already so fragile — an ill father, a struggling family, the constant weight of being their only hope. Every failure felt like a nail in his coffin. And without someone telling him he was more than his marks, without someone teaching him that life was bigger than a report card, he might have given in to the silence forever. At best, he would have been a timid, anxious engineer, working in some small firm, bowing his head to every boss, never daring to dream of more.

And Virus? Virus would have won. The system would have marched on unchallenged. The dean’s word would have stayed law, his stopwatch ticking louder than the heartbeat of every student in that hall. Suicide notes would have continued to pile up, written in shaky handwriting, folded neatly beside unfinished assignments. Parents would have buried children and still believed the system was right, that it was discipline and competition that mattered most.

Even Pia’s story would have played differently. She would have married the price tag her father approved. She’d live in a house full of things but empty of love. The scooter that carried her through the rain would have been traded for a luxury car, but without the laughter that made it shine.

And Phunsukh Wangdu? He would have stayed a hidden name. The inventions, the schools, the future he dreamed for children who couldn’t afford it — they would never have been built. The world would have lost a thousand small miracles because the man who imagined them never stood up in that classroom to ask, “Why?”

That’s the thing about absence. You don’t notice it at first. Life goes on, the semesters roll forward, the jobs arrive, the weddings happen. On the surface, nothing breaks. But the cracks are everywhere, invisible until it’s too late. Without Rancho, there is no rebellion. Without Rancho, there is no laughter echoing through the hostel hallways at 3 a.m. Without Rancho, there are only three idiots, not friends, but just classmates who went their separate ways, swallowed by the system.

Sometimes I think about this, about how fragile life is about how one person can change everything, not because they are a hero, not because they have money or power, but because they dare to live differently. Rancho was a question mark in a world full of periods. Take him away, and everything becomes predictable. Straight lines. Silent halls. Obedient children. A nation of engineers, but not a single dreamer.

And that, maybe, is the scariest thing of all…
