Movie Review: Mother Mary

Welcome back one and all to our final review of the week, this time featuring Mother Mary.

This movie…well…it perplexed me, so let’s just jump straight into the plot and review.

Mother Mary follows Anne Hathaway, who is a pop star going on a resurgence/comeback tour after I guess a suicide attempt or something, but alas, she cannot perform without a new dress. Because of this, she reconnects with her old best friend, and current enemy, Michaela Coel, and the two spend the rest of the movie kind of just rehashing their lives, their friendship split, and I guess a ghost that they both share. Honestly, I’d love to give more info outside of this, but this movie was nonsensical. I don’t understand what happened, I didn’t get any of the symbolism, and most of the runtime is just Anne Hathaway crying, a dress ghost fluttering around, or Michaela Coel saying how much she hates Anne Hathaway. But, to do my best at summing up the ending, they kind of rekindle their friendship, Anne Hathaway gets her dress, and I guess she performs and all's well that ends well.

Alright, let me just say, I really didn’t enjoy my time in Mother Mary. I don’t think this is the worst movie of the year, but it was just boring, any symbolism or metaphors they were trying to present didn’t land, and I felt no connection or interest in Anne Hathaway and Michaela Coel rekindling their friendship.

If I had to use a word to describe this movie, it would be boring. Nothing happens, people just run around, cry, a weird red ghost comes in and out, and it ends leaving no impact whatsoever.

Maybe I’m just not the intended audience, maybe I’m media illiterate, maybe it was just an off day, but whatever it was, I found no intrigue, joy, or even entertainment from Mother Mary.

I also have thought long and hard about the symbolism, and I honest to god have got nothing. I don’t understand or know what the ghost was supposed to symbolize, I’m not sure what the “why” behind this movie was, and I don’t feel like this is a me thing, I think it’s just Mother Mary being a bit too pretentious without actually having any substance.

I will also say, I don’t think the performances in this movie are bad, but I think they are just meh at best. Michaela Coel is clearly the standout here, and she is doing good acting, but Anne Hathaway on the other hand is just crying and whimpering for two hours, which got old real fast.

Honestly, thinking about it more, I may have strongly disliked this movie. It just felt like nothing happened, the runtime felt daunting, and I didn’t find myself entertained at really any point during the movie.

I can see some people finding joy and liking this, and if you did, that’s great! But for me, this was not it at all.

Because of this, I rated Mother Mary as a 1 star on Letterboxd, and I did not give it a like.
