My SIWES Experience

What I Learned During My Industrial Training

Starting my SIWES was an exciting experience for me because it gave me the opportunity to move beyond what I had learned in the classroom and experience how things are done in a real working environment.

As a student interested in technology and web development, I was looking forward to learning new skills, working on practical tasks, and understanding what it really means to work as a developer.

My First Days

When I started my SIWES, I was excited but also a little nervous. I knew I had some knowledge of web development, but I also knew that working in a professional environment would be different from learning on my own.

During my first few days, I focused on understanding the environment, getting familiar with the tasks I would be given, and learning how to work with other people.

One of the things I quickly realized was that being a developer is not only about knowing how to write code. You also need to be willing to learn, ask questions, solve problems, accept corrections, and improve continuously.

Improving My Frontend Development Skills

One of the major areas I focused on during my SIWES was frontend development.

I worked with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript and became more comfortable with building webpages and making them responsive.

Before my SIWES, I understood the basics of these technologies, but working on practical projects helped me understand them better.

I learned how HTML provides the structure of a webpage, CSS is used to control its appearance and layout, and JavaScript adds functionality and interaction.

I also spent time improving my understanding of responsive design. I learned that a website should not only look good on a laptop or desktop but should also work properly on phones and tablets.

Working on Projects

One of the most enjoyable parts of my SIWES experience was working on different projects.

I worked on projects that allowed me to practice the skills I was learning. Some of these included a To-Do List, an Order Summary Component, and a Student Information Program.

Working on these projects helped me understand that coding becomes easier when you practice consistently.

For example, building a To-Do List helped me understand how JavaScript can be used to make a webpage interactive. Instead of just creating a static page, I had to think about how users would add tasks, interact with them, and manage them.

The projects also helped me improve my problem-solving skills because things did not always work on the first attempt.

Sometimes I would write code that looked correct but still produce an error. I had to go back, inspect the code, understand what went wrong, and find a solution.

Learning to Debug

Another important lesson I learned during my SIWES was debugging.

At first, seeing errors in my code could be frustrating. However, I gradually understood that errors are a normal part of programming.

Instead of immediately thinking that I had failed, I learned to look at the error, identify where the problem was coming from, and work through it step by step.

This changed the way I approach coding problems.

I learned that patience is very important in programming. Sometimes the solution is simple, but finding it requires careful attention.

Using VS Code and Managing My Projects

I also became more comfortable using Visual Studio Code as my development environment.

I learned how to organize my project files properly, including my HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and image files.

This may seem like a small thing, but I realized that good file organization makes it much easier to work on a project.

I also learned how important it is to keep my work organized so that I can easily find and update files when necessary.

Challenges I Faced

My SIWES experience was not without challenges.

There were times when I struggled to understand certain concepts or when my code did not behave the way I expected.

Sometimes I had to spend a lot of time trying to figure out why something was not working.

There were also moments when I compared my progress to other developers and felt like I still had a lot to learn.

However, I learned that development is a continuous learning process. Nobody knows everything, and there will always be another technology, concept, or problem to learn.

Instead of allowing the challenges to discourage me, I started seeing them as opportunities to improve.

Lessons Beyond Coding

One of the biggest things SIWES taught me is that technical skills are only part of becoming a good professional.

I also learned about communication, time management, responsibility, and being open to feedback.

I learned that when someone corrects your work, the goal is not necessarily to criticize you. Sometimes the correction is what helps you understand a better way of doing something.

I also learned the importance of meeting expectations and taking responsibility for the tasks assigned to me.

These are lessons that I believe will be useful to me even beyond software development.

How SIWES Changed Me

Looking back, I can say that my SIWES experience helped me become more confident in my abilities.

I still have a lot to learn, but I now have a better understanding of what it means to build something with code and improve it through practice.

The experience also made me more interested in frontend development because I enjoy seeing how lines of code can become a complete website or interactive application.

Most importantly, I realized that becoming a good developer does not happen overnight. It requires consistency, practice, patience, and a willingness to keep learning.

Final Thoughts

My SIWES experience has been an important part of my journey as a student and aspiring developer.

It gave me the opportunity to apply what I had learned, work on practical projects, face real challenges, and develop both my technical and personal skills.

There is still a lot ahead of me, and I know I have more technologies and concepts to learn. But I am grateful for the experience because it has given me a stronger foundation and a clearer idea of the direction I want to take.
