As a parent, I’m reminded of this idea every time I take my child to the playground. The structures never change: the slide stays in the same spot, the swing continues to swing, and the seesaw rocks back and forth as it always has.
What does change is how children choose to interact with the playground. On one visit, they may find the confidence to climb a bit higher. On another, they may invent a new game with their friends or have the willingness to explore an area that once felt out of reach. Even though the environment remains the same, the experience is new each time.
Organizations also need “playground structures” of their own — shared practices, ways of working, and cultural anchors that don’t shift with every new disruption. These foundations serve as the building blocks of adaptability, providing teams with the safety and stability to stretch, learn, and confidently embrace new challenges.
And with change now a constant state of being for most organizations, the ability to quickly and efficiently adapt is crucial.

Our Slalom Innovation Day in Indianapolis brought this concept to life, inviting our customers into a space where they could explore emerging technologies and apply innovation in ways that deliver value beyond the proof of concept. Demo stations led by Slalom, Salesforce, Databricks, and Fullstory became playground structures of their own — steady foundations that allowed leaders to test, tinker, and ideate with each other. The conversations that followed were the real spark, with participants leaning in to ask, “How can this apply to my business?”
That sense of momentum carried into the afternoon, culminating in a panel that offered an opportunity to step back and consider what it takes to lead through AI and ongoing transformation. And it’s this emphasis on solving concrete business challenges that defined the true impact of Innovation Day. The event wasn’t just about showcasing technology, but about surfacing the kinds of insights leaders need to guide their organizations into the future. What emerged wasn’t a single answer, but a set of lessons: that AI is reshaping decision-making, that adaptability must be engineered into culture, and that leaders must reevaluate how their teams learn, collaborate, and thrive.

Left unaddressed, those cracks can prevent organizations from realizing the very ROI they’re chasing.
