I Asked ChatGPT to Fix My Writing — Its Answer Surprised Me

I expected better sentences. What I got was a lesson I didn’t expect.

A few nights ago, I did something simple.

I copied one of my Medium drafts into OpenAI ChatGPT and asked it to improve my writing.

I expected cleaner grammar.

Better sentence flow.

A more polished article.

Instead, what I got forced me to rethink the way I’ve been approaching writing online.

And honestly, it was a little uncomfortable to realize.

Why I Tried This

Over the last few days, I’ve been closely watching my Medium stats.

The views were coming.

The numbers were moving.

But the reads weren’t growing the way I wanted.

That gap kept bothering me.

I started asking myself difficult questions.

Was my writing too generic?

Too polished?

Too predictable?

I wanted an honest outside perspective.

So I turned to ChatGPT.

The Prompt I Used

I pasted my article and wrote:

“Tell me exactly why this doesn’t feel engaging enough for readers.”

I expected small technical corrections.

Maybe grammar suggestions.

Maybe headline improvements.

But the response was completely different.

The Unexpected Feedback

The tool didn’t point out grammar problems first.

It pointed out something much deeper.

It said the article felt structured.

Clear.

Informative.

But emotionally distant.

That line stayed with me.

Emotionally distant.

The more I thought about it, the more I realized it was right.

I had been writing to sound impressive.

Not to sound real.

That Realization Hit Hard

For a moment, I just stared at the screen.

Because deep down, I already knew it was true.

I had been focusing too much on sounding like a professional writer.

Trying to make every paragraph look perfect.

Trying to make every sentence feel polished.

But in doing that, I had removed something important:

My own voice.

And without that, even well-written content can feel empty.

What I Changed Immediately

That night, I rewrote my draft differently.

I stopped trying to sound perfect.

I started writing exactly how I was thinking.

More honestly.

More directly.

More naturally.

And for the first time, the article actually felt like mine.

Not like something carefully engineered to impress.

But something real.

What This Taught Me About AI

This experience taught me something I didn’t expect.

AI is not most useful when it writes for us.

It’s most useful when it helps us see what we’re missing.

That’s the real value.

It can reflect patterns to us.

It can highlight weaknesses.

But it cannot replace the human experience behind the words.

That part still belongs to the writer.

What I’m Doing Differently Now

From this point forward, my writing strategy is changing.

I’m still using AI.

But differently.

Not as a replacement.

As a mirror.

A tool to help me notice blind spots.

A tool to improve clarity.

But never something that replaces authenticity.

Because I’m starting to understand something important:

Readers don’t stay for perfection.

They stay for honesty.

Final Thoughts

I asked ChatGPT to fix my writing.

Instead, it exposed what was actually broken.

And strangely, that was exactly what I needed.

Sometimes improvement doesn’t come from learning new techniques.

Sometimes it comes from returning to what was real all along.

That’s the lesson I’m taking with me.
