SIGGRAPH 2025 Recap: Highlights, Cool Tech, and Too Much Coffee.

Welcome to another day of my 75 days of writing — because clearly, if I don’t put my thoughts about SIGGRAPH 2025 into the world, how will anyone possibly know it happened?

SIGGRAPH 2025: Where Artists, Scientists, and a Lot of Coffee Collide

1. A Legacy That Won’t Quit

Once upon a time in 1974, a bunch of computer graphics nerds met in Boulder, Colorado, and thought, “Hey, what if we all came back next year… and forever after?” And thus began SIGGRAPH — Special Interest Group on Computer Graphics — aka the Comic-Con for pixels, shaders, and people who argue about polygon counts like it’s a religion.

Back then, it was just 600 attendees, some very questionable fashion choices, and a few slides of wireframe teapots. Fast-forward to now: 14,000+ people, billion-dollar companies flexing their tech, and enough GPU power on the show floor to accidentally summon Skynet. It’s basically Woodstock for anyone who can explain eigenvalues without crying and thinks “normal mapping” is casual conversation.

2. SIGGRAPH 2025 Highlights (a.k.a. The Cool Stuff)

In August 2025, Vancouver got taken over by the kind of people who think “fun” means debating ray tracing optimizations at 2 AM. The conference was an overflowing buffet of keynotes, tech demos, academic papers, and just enough free swag to make you pretend the $1,500 ticket was “worth it.”

Keynotes That Made You Feel Both Inspired and Dumb

  • Dr. Aaron Hertzmann asked whether computers can create art — spoiler: probably yes, but humans will still find a way to turn it into uninspired NFT garbage.
  • NVIDIA Research casually dropped demos of AI so advanced it could probably guess your Steam password. Topics included neural rendering, simulation systems, and “world foundation models” (read: they’re building the Matrix, and it’s ahead of schedule).
  • Dr. Anjali Tripathi took us to the stars — literally — exploring exoplanets, cosmic storytelling, and how space data can inspire new worlds in films and games.
  • David S. Goyer, sponsored by Autodesk, gave a talk about AI in storytelling. Because nothing says “relatable protagonist” like a plot crafted by a neural net that also moonlights as your email spam filter.

Technical Papers: Brain Gym for the Rest of Us

This year’s Technical Papers program broke records with 970 submissions, which is a polite way of saying: “Prepare to sit in a dark room for three hours and question your career choices.”

  • Shape Space Spectra: Uses math magic to make shapes dance, sing, and generally behave like they belong in a Pixar movie. Good for animation, physics simulations, and scaring first-year grad students.
  • CAST: Turns a single photo into a full 3D scene — textures, lighting, everything. You take a picture of your living room, and boom, you’re in a VR replica. Extremely cool… and extremely unsettling for real estate photographers.
  • Transformer IMU Calibrator: A deep learning approach that turns shaky, inaccurate motion capture into buttery-smooth animation. Basically, it’s the difference between “this looks like a drunk puppet” and “wow, this could win an Oscar.”

The Show Floor: Where Wallets Go to Die

The Emerging Technologies Pavilion was a candy store for people whose idea of a snack is a $6,000 AR headset.

  • Immersive labs with haptic gloves that let you “feel” virtual objects — finally, you can high-five a 3D model of yourself.
  • LED volumetric displays that made flat screens feel like the VHS of visual tech.
  • Wearable eye-tracking rigs that look like they came from a cyberpunk cosplay convention but will probably be in every theme park ride by 2028.

And yes, NVIDIA’s booth was packed. They were showing real-time path tracing so good it could make a rock emotional. Also, they had those chairs — you know, the super comfy ones where you accidentally spend 45 minutes watching a demo you don’t understand.

3. Who Showed Up

Basically everyone in computer graphics with a travel budget:

  • Disney, DreamWorks, Pixar, Wētā FX, MPC, ILM, Netflix Animation, Framestore — showing off behind-the-scenes workflows that made you want to clap and cry at the same time.
  • NVIDIA — still king of the GPU hill and not shy about reminding you every 30 seconds.
  • Academic rockstars, indie devs, startup founders, students in matching SIGGRAPH volunteer shirts… and a suspicious number of people “just here for networking” (translation: they’re job hunting).

4. The Stars of the Show

If SIGGRAPH 2025 were a high school yearbook:

Honorable mentions: the coffee carts in the conference center, which were running a black-market economy by Wednesday.

5. Why SIGGRAPH Still Matters (Even if You’re Exhausted by Day 3)

Because where else can you:

  • Hear a PhD talk about geometry processing while a Hollywood VFX artist mutters about render times in the next seat?
  • Watch a startup founder try to explain their VR haptic product to someone who clearly just wanted to play with it for free?
  • Witness the exact moment a research prototype makes an entire audience think, “Oh… that’s going to replace my job, isn’t it?”

It’s the one place where art, science, caffeine, and existential dread meet in harmony.

Also — like it or not — this is where the next five years of graphics tech are previewed. Your favorite movie in 2028? The tools that made it were probably shown here… between a lecture on GPU optimization and a panel on virtual cats.

6. My Totally Unbiased Conclusion

SIGGRAPH 2025 proved yet again that the future of computer graphics is both amazing and slightly terrifying. The research is brilliant, the industry is thriving, and the tech is so advanced you almost feel guilty using it to render a donut in Blender.

So, my takeaway? Make friends with AI now — it’ll either be your creative partner or your new boss. And keep going to SIGGRAPH, if only for the free tote bags and existential crisis.
