But what happens if we want to emphasize why or when you are late? Let’s put “Today” (Vandaag) at the very beginning.

• Vandaag (1) bent (2) je (3) te laat.

Notice how “je” and “bent” flipped? That is inversion. The verb refused to move from its beloved second spot, so the subject (je) had to jump over it.
