The Brain Fog That Doesn’t Hurt

No one warns you about this one.

I do not know what happened.

I woke up this morning fully planning to finally start YouTube. I did not start YouTube.

I might try later. But my head will not budge.

I can not even do the little Substack things today. And the strangest part, the part no one ever talks about:

My head does not hurt.

It is not a migraine. It is not burnout. It is not tiredness. I am not sad. I am not upset. I just cannot think. I cannot hold a thought end to end. I cannot weigh two options against each other and come up with an answer. I am completely, totally, neutrally stuck.

I am really at a loss.

I have been turning the same two options over for days. And as much as I am fighting it, it has become very clear that Substack is the absolute maximum my head is willing to handle right now.

I have given myself a cutoff. I will try YouTube once now, and once more on Friday. If it still will not click, I am putting it down entirely. I will go all in on Substack, indefinitely, until my head decides it is ready to cooperate.

It feels like a shame. But the bigger shame is already the four months I have spent waiting to be good enough to just get started.

Ten minutes ago I could not even remember the word ‘Substack’.

I sat here staring at the screen for five full minutes, trying to pull it out of my head. I could describe it perfectly. I could tell you everything I was supposed to do on it. I could not for the life of me remember what it was called. Eventually I had to go dig up an old chat log with ChatGPT just to find the name.

It really is amazing.

Everyone writes about brain fog. Everyone writes about the one that hurts, the one that comes with long covid, or burnout, or a hangover, or grief. No one tells you about this one. The one that is completely silent. The one that leaves you wide awake, completely lucid, and utterly incapable of doing anything that requires even the smallest amount of cognitive effort.

No one believes you when you try to explain it. You don’t look sick. You don’t even feel sick. You just cannot.

I am writing this down mostly just so I can see it. So I can hold this thing that has no name, out in front of me. It feels like it has implications I can not quite see yet.

After Friday, it will be all Substack. Until my head can get it together.

I am going to go try YouTube now.

Wish me luck. I really need it.
