How a Simple Journal Changed My Life — and How It Can Change Yours

My First LifeVision Journal: How journaling helped me manifest my first dream

When I finished college, my brother gave me a simple blank notebook with a few questions and journal prompts at the top of each page. One of the first pages in that notebook asked me to create a bucket list, and that small exercise marked the beginning of my journey into personal development, self-reflection, and intentional living.

From Pursuing the American Dream to Facing a Quarter-Life Crisis

In my early 20s, I unknowingly followed the traditional path set for me. As the daughter of Asian immigrant parents, I did what was expected: worked hard, earned good grades, graduated in the top 10% of my class from USC Business School and landed a job at Fox Studios. I was on the path to climb the American corporate ladder. I found myself saving two weeks of annual vacation for a single overseas trip a year. Though I rightfully earned it after working over 2000 hours each year, I was still questioned and given a hard time on why I would want to take all my vacation time at once or even use it all. I began to question whether this was the life I truly wanted or simply the life I felt obligated to live.

One morning, I woke up from a dream in which I was at work — only to dread the reality of actually having to go there. I looked around at the executives in my office and realized this was the life ahead of me if I stayed on this path. Management spending 60+ hours at work, playing the coporate politics game, managing cogs in one department of a big company. It wasn’t the life I wanted. I didn’t want to spend the prime years of my life making the Rupert Murdochs of the world richer and climbing a ladder that felt empty.

By the time I was 25, I had spent nearly my entire life in Los Angeles. I was in a long-term relationship and talking about settling down. I was on track to live that ideal life that the “American Dream” was built on but felt increasingly disillusioned. Then, I remembered that bucket list entry in the notebook my brother gave me. One item jumped out at me: “Live Overseas.”

My First Manifestation

Having missed out on spending the summer after high school in Europe, I decided I wanted more than just a vacation — I wanted to live there. This wasn’t just a wish; it became my first real intention. Instead of just visiting, I moved to London and leaving everything behind.

Creating a bucket list was a pivotal moment for me. It was the first time I consciously reflected on what I truly wanted in life, wrote it down, and was reminded to pursue it. It was my first intention, manifestation, goal — whatever you want to call it — it was my first step in creating the life I envisioned, grounded in my own values, aspirations, and dreams.

Learning to Live Intentionally

Fast forward over a decade, I’d lived in London, Australia, and now Bali. During the Covid lockdown, I was on my own with my rescue dog, diving deeply into self-development taking as many Mindvalley courses as possible. I discovered Jon and Missy Butcher’s LifeBook program, which introduced me to the power of crafting a personal LifeBook. Their 30-year relationship and their entire life was inspiring. If anyone can give you the blueprint to creating the life and relationship you want, they were living examples. I completed the LifeBook program and put together my own personal LifeBook.

No longer a victim of circumstance or my environment and just flowing whereever the wind took me, I decided to live my life intentionally. I wrote down my own life vision and everyday since, I have been living to create the life I always wanted with a clear vision in my mind of what that looks like.
