A few days ago, I passed the Microsoft Azure Fundamentals (AZ-900) certification.

While clearing the exam felt great, the first thought that came to my mind afterward wasn’t excitement it was regret.

Why didn’t I do this years ago?

As a software engineer working with .NET and Azure-based applications, I always assumed AZ-900 was too basic for me. I thought certifications were something I could always do “later” when I had more time.

That “later” turned into years.

The Biggest Misconception

I believed that because I was already working with Azure services, I didn’t need a fundamentals certification.

• Different Azure service categories
• Cost optimization concepts

The certification helped me connect the dots between services I use and the bigger cloud ecosystem.

Preparation Was Easier Than Expected

Looking back, AZ-900 was not as difficult as I imagined.

I prepared using:

• Microsoft Learn modules
• Practice tests

The biggest challenge wasn’t the content.

It was simply getting started.

AZ-900 provides a strong foundation that helps you understand the “why” behind many cloud decisions.

Even experienced developers can benefit from revisiting the fundamentals.

What’s Next?

Passing AZ-900 has given me confidence to pursue more advanced Azure certifications.

My next target is AZ-204 (Azure Developer Associate).

This time, I don’t want to wait for years before taking the next step.

Final Thoughts

Sometimes the certifications we keep postponing are the ones that provide the most value.

AZ-900 reminded me that learning fundamentals is never a waste of time. In fact, it often strengthens everything built on top of them.

If you’ve been delaying AZ-900 because you think it’s too basic or not worth the effort, my advice is simple:

Stop overthinking and book the exam.

You might end up asking yourself the same question I did:

“Why didn’t I do this earlier?”
