I wish I had frozen my eggs at 30, but I’m glad I started at 37

I am 37 years old. I was supposed to marry my partner, but we broke up after four years together. So, I decided to go ahead with egg freezing. The doctor told me to come in on days 1 to 3 of my menstrual cycle. I had an ultrasound, was prescribed a few supplements, and was told to come back on days 1 to 3 of the following month, along with a list of lab tests to get done.

The next month, I went back for another ultrasound and had five follicles. The doctor prescribed two medications for six days – one subcutaneous injection and one intramuscular injection – and asked me to return after those six days.

Yesterday was that day, so I went in. I had another ultrasound, but the follicle sizes were still not sufficient. The doctor prescribed medications for four more days, adding a new drug to the regimen. I will start that one on Saturday to prevent premature ovulation, with the egg retrieval scheduled for Monday.

Because the follicle count is low, this process will likely have to be repeated. Egg freezing is generally recommended at a younger age, when the egg count is higher and the quality is better.
