The race to develop autonomous digital workers that could reshape how businesses operate is intensifying as companies seek to automate complex tasks, reduce operational costs, and gain competitive advantages in an increasingly digital economy. AI start-ups make money faster than software groups of the past. This is the new reality and opportunity as well. AI start-ups making revenue quicker than past waves of software companies. Many AI groups are going from zero to tens of millions in revenue in a couple of years. The demand for GenAI that can generate text, code, images, audio and video is global that means revenue comes from anywhere in the world.

New generation AI Assistants: From Copilots to Autonomous Agents

The AI landscape is changing every moment. What began as “AI Copilots” — a term first popularized by Microsoft is industry’s main response to my favorite NLP toy chatGPT, which take by surprise across the globe with its remarkable Language Processing capability.

Small Language Models

Now, we stand at another inflection point. The industry is witnessing a significant shift from Large Language Models (LLMs) toward Small Language Models (SLMs), heralding a new chapter in the AI journey. These compact yet powerful models (Teacher-Student Model) promise greater efficiency, reduced computational requirements, and enhanced privacy features — all while maintaining impressive performance.

But the evolution doesn’t stop there. Beyond the technical transition from LLMs to SLMs lies a more fundamental shift in functionality: from AI assistants to agents; Silicon Valley’s tech giants are increasingly focused on developing production-ready AI agents capable of accomplishing complex autonomous operations. These agents represent more than mere tools responding to prompts; they can independently plan, reason, and execute complex business tasks with minimal or no human supervision.

Building on the success of our LLM Agents MOOC from Fall 2024, Berkeley RDI launched advanced topics in LLM agents, focusing on reasoning, AI for mathematics, code generation, and program verification. Application Architecture is different than traditional computing paradigm. What AI agents can do: think tutors that teach themselves, copilots that collaborate and multiagent systems that can negotiate on your behalf.

Over the years, the consumer behavior is changing. What was once a simple keyword-based approach has evolved into a more sophisticated, conversational interaction with search engines. Today’s consumers are increasingly framing their queries as complete questions rather than keyword search, reflecting a fundamental shift in how they engage with digital information systems. They want most accurate and short answer. To remain competitive in this evolved landscape, organizations must adapt their digital strategies to prioritize answering specific questions clearly and concisely.
