“Prënzebierg — Giele Botter” nature reserve: red-and-green landscapes of a former iron ore mining site

Slowly working through a backlog of routes we walked a couple of months ago but didn’t get around to writing about yet.

Today I’m covering the Prënzebierg nature reserve. This area used to be an iron ore mining site, and now nature is gradually reclaiming it. The result is a striking mix of red rock formations and greenery 😍

There are 4 routes through the reserve. We walked the first two:

1️⃣ Geological children’s trail “Giele Botter”

• ~3 km
• Circular route, start/end point in Differdange
• Probably the best concentration of red rock formations and oddly shaped trees, plus an entrance to an old mine, information panels, and a beautiful viewpoint over the lake in the middle of the reserve 🤩

2️⃣ Hiking trail “Prënzebierg — Giele Botter”

• Almost 8 km
• Circular route, start/end in Petange (literally a few steps from the train station)
• Includes everything from the children’s trail above: mine entrance, red cliffs, and the central lake. In addition, there’s an extended loop through hills and forest, several scenic benches, and romantically overgrown industrial bridges and ruins.
• I’d recommend this in dry weather, as right after the station there is a fairly steep uphill through the forest, which can be quite slippery and difficult when wet 🤔

Summary: if you have small children or kids who don’t like walking, the first route is clearly the better choice. If you want something more challenging with more elevation gain and extra scenic points, the second one is better. All photos in the heading of this post are from the 2nd route 👆

There are two additional routes in the reserve, each with its own twist (we haven’t done them yet, but I’ve saved them for later):

3️⃣ Auto-pédestre Lamadelaine

• 8+ km
• Circular route, start/end in Pétange
• Wide loop including Celtic village ruins, ponds, and the nature reserve — an interesting mix of Celts and mining history ❤️

4️⃣ “Niederkorn–Rodange” trail

• 10+ km
• CFL “station-to-station” hike, starting in Differdange and ending in Pétange
• In addition to Prënzebierg, it partially overlaps with the Sentier des Mineurs: a large trail in southern Luxembourg combining industrial heritage with natural landscapes
