Let Us Prohibit Nuclear Weapons and Ensure Biodiversity

Nuclear energy is a form of energy that occurs through nuclear fusion or fission. The release of nuclear energy is accomplished in three steps. The first is the emergence of nuclear energy, which happens through the decay of radioactive elements or the movement of neutrons and protons located in the nucleus of an atom of radioactive substances. The second is the release of nuclear energy through nuclear fusion, a process achieved by the combination of two atomic nuclei to form a larger nucleus. The last is the generation of nuclear energy through nuclear fission, which occurs when a massive nucleus splits into more than two smaller atomic nuclei. When a heavy atom is struck by a neutron, it transforms into lighter atoms, releasing heat energy—this is known as nuclear energy. At the beginning of this reaction, three neutrons are produced.

Suppose the number of neutrons generated from each nuclear reaction = 3.

One nuclear reaction generates three neutrons: 3¹ = 3

Two nuclear reactions generate nine neutrons: 3² = 9

Three nuclear reactions generate twenty-seven neutrons: 3³ = 27

Gradually, the number of neutrons increases as they participate in further nuclear reactions, eventually forming a nuclear chain reaction system. The continuous nature of nuclear reactions and the incessant production of nuclear energy can never produce positive outcomes, as evidenced by Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The production of nuclear energy should be carried out only as a necessity for research and electricity generation.

Excess nuclear energy should not be used to make atomic bombs or other nuclear weapons. Misuse of nuclear weapons can cause massive damage to the world’s climate. Experimenting with sea-based nuclear weapons can never provide a good solution; in fact, it endangers the ocean’s ecosystem. The immersion of defective nuclear submarines at the bottom of the seas poses a serious threat to marine biodiversity.

This is an interdisciplinary essay written five years ago in which physics, math, environmental science, history, and policy are integrated.
