You Are Not A Gadget

You Are Not A Gadget by Jaron Lanier dives deep into the mind of communication, technology and the hive mind theory. The theoretical frameworks of this shows his passion for music and the arts. Lanier’s style of writing is one that matches his larger than life personality. He is definitely a man of the arts and one who appreciates music. Although this book was written in 2010 its interesting to see the narratives play out in more recent times. Similar to Jane McGonigal’s book Reality is Broken the to authors share. McGonigal’s theoretical framework stood on the basis of the positives aspects of the virtual world and how real happiness is found when people use games. The horrible truths of the about life aren’t ever present when you play games. McGonigal’s TedTalk and entire argument of the book is pro-technology, while Lanier is argues the importance of human beings.

Whereas, Lanier seems to go against the grain when it comes to computers. He understands the importance of technology, but also knows that there is importance for humanity.

There is no spirituality in technology and Lanier tells us that we should not become too caught up in computers and technology that we forget the computers are here because of us. Lanier’s idea that we should not get caught up in the “hive mind” is similar to say not to get caught up in social media sites (Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, etc.).

Today we broke off in the separate groups to analyze in different chapters of the book. My group had the responsibility of engaging in conversation about Chapter 11 of You Are Not A Gadget. In our group, one of the main takeaways was the lack of individualism. For example. Twitter and Facebook area social networking platforms that allow people to operate in the hive mind. We literally follow the leader. We follow profiles that have large followings, when someone has a post that we agree with we share it so our friends will see it and are able to voice our opinions.

The title of the book You Are Not A Gadget. Is self explanatory towards Lanier’s views or bias towards technology. In my opinion, I believe Lanier is not completely opposed to technology, but knows that we can not solely rely on it. Whereas, McGonigal wants us to embrace the virtual world more. Immersing ourselves into video games and the essence of “gamefulness” is our saving grace and answer to the world’s most prominent issues.
