Is this the year?

Middlesex will be hoping this is the year they finally return to Finals Day. Their sole title in 2008 remains the only time they have passed the quarter-final stage in the 23 seasons of the T20 Blast, only Derbyshire Falcons have reached Finals Day as few times as Middlesex since the T20 Blast’s inception in 2003. They enter this year’s tournament on the back of a disappointing campaign last season finishing eighth in the nine team South Group, failing to progress past the group phase for a sixth successive season.

New faces

The loss of last season’s top two run-scorers in Stephen Eskinazi (420 runs) and Kane Williamson (396 runs) leaves Middlesex with a gaping hole at the top of the batting order and they will look to the returning Adam Rossington to get his side off to positive starts with the bat. The 33-year-old wicketkeeper returns to the club after 12 years away on a short-term deal for the first six matches of the T20 Blast.

The form of overseas signing Matthew Boyle, announced the day before Middlesex’s opening night clash with Kent, will also have a significant influence on Middlesex’s chances this season. The New Zealand A batter boasts an impressive career strike rate of just over 150 in his 28 T20 matches to date and coach Peter Fulton has spoken of Boyle’s ability to “add power to our top order”.

Meanwhile, South African fast bowler Eathan Bosch adds firepower and T20 experience to a dynamic bowling attack. The pacer has featured in both the Caribbean Premier League and the SA20 to go along with a previous T20 Blast stint at Essex in 2024.

Squad selection

The departures of Middlesex’s leading run scorers from the 2025 T20 Blast, Stephen Eskinazi and Kane Williamson, mean that the returning Adam Rossington and overseas recruit Matthew Boyle are likely to have significant roles in the batting line-up.

Ben Geddes’ callup to the England Lions squad for their two four-day games against South Africa A is also likely to create a vacancy in the team that may be taken up by either 24-year-old Josh De Caires, son of former England captain Michael Atherton, or the talented England under-19 batter Caleb Falconer.

Zafar Gohar and Luke Hollman are expected to re-unite as a twin spin attack, while Eathan Bosch and Tom Helm spearhead an exciting pace attack. The final seamer to complete the attack appears to be a marginal call, with Sebastian Morgan making a promising start to the season in four-day cricket. However, Noah Cornwell’s left-arm variety and greater T20 experience may help nudge himself into the Middlesex XI.

Key Player: Leus Du Plooy is yet to reach the heights he reached with Derbyshire in the T20 Blast. 368 runs at an average of 23 across his 2 T20 Blast seasons at Middlesex represents a middling return for the Middlesex captain. However, du Plooy has shown he has the ability and the temperament to excel at this level, top-scoring for Derbyshire in their 2021 campaign with 395 runs. He also has the form, coming into the T20 Blast off the back of a promising season so far in four-day cricket where he has averaged over 50. Middlesex’s hopes of challenging for the 2026 trophy will be greatly enhanced if captain du Plooy can lead from the front.

Rising Star: Caleb Falconer hit a sensational 115 off just 67 balls in the Under-19 World Cup Final defeat to India in February to highlight his white-ball credentials and recently made his first-class debut for Middlesex earlier this month in a low-scoring win over Lancashire at Old Trafford. In a batting line-up that has lost key players Caleb Falconer could get chances to make his name in this years T20 Blast.

Strengths: A bowling attack spearheaded by overseas quick Eathan Bosch and former England Lions pacer Tom Helm, who provides a quality death bowling option, looks well stocked. Combine this with exciting young seam options in Sebastian Morgan, Naavya Sharma and Noah Cornwell to go with the all-round talents of Ryan Higgins and Middlesex are spoilt for seam bowling options. The spin twins of Zafar Gohar and Luke Hollman also add to the all-round nature of Middlesex’s lower middle-order and could star this season with both bat and ball.

Weaknesses: With the departures of Williamson and Eskinazi, a batting line-up that struggled at times last season has lost key experienced batters. The call-up of Ben Geddes to the England Lions also leaves the Seaxes without another regular starter from last seasons campaign for their initial matches.

Season Prediction

A squad that is brimming with young talent especially in the seam bowling department with Sebastian Morgan, Naavya Sharma and Noah Cornwell all 21 or under should make for exciting viewing. However, it remains to be seen whether the batting can withstand the loss of opening duo Eskinazi and Williamson. Max Holden was the only other batter to average over 24 for Middlesex in the T20 Blast last season and others will need to step up if the Seaxes are to make it to Finals Day for the first time since their 2008 triumph. While the signing of Matthew Boyle could prove a canny addition and the club seem set to improve on a disappointing 2025 showing, doubts still linger over their batting. Prediction: Group stage elimination.
