Climate justice and liberty require racial unity:

The fight for EJ & CJ remains the solution to our most unfair and pressing problems, but it grows harder amid tragic backtracking in our nation’s progress toward a more Perfect Union — the end goal envisioned by both Malcolm X and President Obama. A Union that embodies every word of the Declaration of Independence, truly honors all people, and recognizes our kinship and common bonds of humanity. This vision is pivotal for solving the interrelated crises of climate change, racial injustice, and chronic underinvestment in public education.

Dear Justice — I know there are so many who think you must quit because the fight is radical and seems hard/improving air quality doesn’t stop with mandating green cars/polluting places need emissions caps & the promise to create new positions that undo past discrimination like unequal public education

Justice as a Guiding Aim

Justice is my aim Achieve it by nurturing every brain As Malcom X proclaimed Eliminate disparities starting with poverty and race Make property values high in every place Spur an amazing evolution in reducing pollution from landfill waste Erase the legacy effects of segregation to without a trace Make every neighborhood safe Bring kids together from different backgrounds On walls and divides we need a crack down

Reckoning with History

My heart shudders at the thought of the wickedness of slavery/ grateful for all those who endured it with bravery/ how can we reconcile such a painful point of our past/ the grip of bigotry over our institutions was vast/ it lasted for two and half years after the Emancipation Proclamation was passed by President Lincoln’s Executive Act but sadly after that on its own promises the federal government turned its back/ every formerly enslaved family was owed a mule and 40 acres/ it was General Sherman’s special Field Order 15, let’s go find the papers/ and enforce the law/ human health and wellbeing shouldn’t be based on a luck of the draw/ in my vision we’ll effectively and equitably reduce carbon emissions by uprooting the pipeline from school to prison/ end all forms of discrimination by bolstering investments in public education/ when it comes to our nations history we must teach the full series including the application of the laws that makes us examine critical race theory/ once we really understand what justice means we can achieve unity/ in the United States everyone deserves a fair opportunity/ we won’t last long unless we agree to make the world a better place by righting past wrongs…

We’re at a critical junction EJ means our ecological system optimally function Phase out the internal combustion engine everywhere Rid pollutants from the air and achieve the true meaning of independence declared on July 4 Even if it wasn’t available for everyone onshore We have continued to evolve The killing of Malcom X and Dr. King can break your resolve But the opportunity for significant change is within us all On many levels EJ would bar the building of a wall It’s harmful for the water supplies, lizards, and butterflies to construct such a massive structure is insane We can only say environmental justice has been attained if everyone on earth is treated humane Implementing programs with treating everyone this way is Is the true aim Mandate community health and good jobs across the supply chain Right now my heart feels for the people fleeing the latest hurricane

And holistic EJ means expanding opportunities to get paid at a justly set wage Spent locally is where the greatest value of the dollar is Advance communities with lowest education rates and fund scholarships Everyone deserves the chance to learn If we can equitably fund public schools the tide will turn!
