The Hardest Part of Moving to the UK Wasn’t the Flight. It Was Saying Goodbye.

A Dream That Finally Became Reality

For years, studying abroad was something I only imagined. I would watch videos about life in the UK, scroll through university websites, and picture myself walking through a new city, experiencing a different culture, and building a future for myself. It always felt far away, like something that would happen “someday.”

Then suddenly, someday arrived.

The visa was approved, the university admission was confirmed, and the flight ticket was booked. What was once just a dream slowly turned into reality. I should have felt only excitement, but as the departure date came closer, something else started building inside me.

Fear.

Not fear of the UK or studying.

But fear of leaving everything familiar behind.

The Last Few Days at Home

The final days before my journey felt different in a way I didn’t fully understand at the time.

I was surrounded by my family, my friends, and everything I had known all my life, but I couldn’t enjoy it the same way anymore. Even simple things started feeling emotional.

I remember sitting at dinner one night and just looking around the table a bit longer than usual. Nobody knew what I was thinking, but in my head I kept repeating, “This is going to change soon.”

Small moments started to feel heavy.

My grandmother asking what I wanted to eat.

My grandfather sitting quietly after a long day.

Friends messaging me casually like nothing was about to change.

But for me, everything was changing.

Even the sound of home at night felt different. It felt like I was noticing my normal life for the first time, just before leaving it behind.

The Airport Goodbye

The airport day came faster than I expected.

Everyone tried to keep things normal. We joked, talked, took photos, and acted like it was just another day. But nobody really believed that.

I still remember my grandmother fixing my hair before I went in. She didn’t say much, just looked at me for a few seconds longer than usual.

That look stayed with me.

We took photos. Too many of them. Some smiling, some quiet, some forced.

When I picked up my luggage and walked toward the security gate, my steps felt heavier than I expected. I turned back once. Then again.

My grandfather just nodded at me. No long speech. Just a simple nod.

That was it.

I walked forward, then stopped for a second and looked back one last time.

They were still standing there.

And I knew that moment would stay with me for a very long time.

Somewhere above the clouds

Somewhere above the clouds

My First International Flight

Once I boarded the plane, everything became quiet.

I sat near the window and just watched everything outside slowly move away. When the plane started taking off, I didn’t feel fear. I felt distance.

It felt like my old life was slowly getting smaller.

I remember holding the small meal they gave on the flight and not even eating it properly. My mind was somewhere else.

At one point, I opened my chat with my family, typed “I’m okay,” then deleted it. It didn’t feel enough to explain anything I was feeling.

Outside the window, everything was clouds and silence.

And in that silence, I realised life was changing whether I was ready or not.

Landing in the UK

When I arrived in the UK, the air felt different immediately.

Cold. Quiet. Unfamiliar.

Even walking inside the airport felt strange. Everything looked new. Signs, voices, people, accents.

I stood there for a moment after collecting my bags, just looking around.

No one knew me here.

That thought hit harder than I expected.

Stepping outside, the cold air hit my face properly for the first time. I pulled my jacket tighter and thought, “So this is it.”

When Homesickness Arrived

The first few days felt exciting. Everything was new, everything was different, and I kept myself busy just adjusting to the environment.

But slowly, that excitement faded.

Homesickness didn’t come like a big moment. It came quietly.

After video calls that ended too quickly.

While eating alone.

While walking back to my room with no one waiting.

It wasn’t loud. It was silent.

And that made it harder.

I realised homesickness isn’t just missing a place. It’s missing the life you didn’t even think about appreciating before.

There were nights I just lay there thinking about home for no reason at all.

Learning to Stand on My Own

Slowly, I had to adjust to everything on my own.

Cooking, budgeting, travel, problem solving, daily planning. Things I never really thought about before suddenly became part of life.

At first, even small things felt like challenges.

But over time, I started handling things without overthinking.

Little by little, I became more independent without even noticing it.

More Than Just a Degree

Most people think studying abroad is only about education.

But it’s not.

A big part of it happens outside the classroom.

It teaches you how to deal with loneliness.

It teaches you how to handle life when no one is there to guide you.

It teaches you how to keep going even when things feel uncomfortable.

There were moments I doubted myself.

There were moments I missed home badly.

But I kept moving anyway.

And that is what mattered most.

Looking Back

Now when I think about my journey, I don’t remember just the flight or the airport.

I remember feelings.

Silence before goodbye.

My grandparent’s eyes before I left.

The cold air in the UK for the first time.

Sitting alone in a new room thinking about home.

Moving to the UK didn’t just change my location.

It changed me.

I came here to study.

But I ended up learning much more about life than I ever expected.

And that is something I will carry with me for the rest of my life.
