How to Actually Learn Jyotish Online — What Works and What Doesn’t

Most people who try to learn Jyotish online fail. Not because they lack intelligence or interest — but because they approach it the wrong way.
At Future Point, India’s astrology institute since 1987, we’ve seen thousands of students make the same mistakes. Here’s what separates those who succeed from those who don’t.
THE MISTAKE MOST BEGINNERS MAKE
They start with predictions before understanding foundations. They watch 10 YouTube videos about Saturn Mahadasha before they even know what a Mahadasha is. They try to learn Jaimini, Parashari, and KP systems simultaneously and end up confused about all three.
Jyotish is a layered system built over thousands of years. You cannot shortcut the sequence.
WHAT ACTUALLY WORKS
1. Master the three pillars first — planets (Navagraha), signs (Rashis), and houses (Bhavas). Everything else in Jyotish is built on these three.
2. Learn the Vimshottari Dasha system properly — this is Jyotish’s most powerful predictive tool and it’s entirely Nakshatra-based. Students who skip Nakshatras and go straight to predictions are building on an incomplete foundation.
3. Practice on real charts weekly — not monthly, not occasionally. Weekly. Set a target of at least 3 charts per week.
4. Do not offer paid readings for at least 2 years — not because you won’t know enough, but because an inaccurate prediction about health, marriage, or finances can genuinely harm someone. Experienced teachers across traditions agree on this.
THE ROLE OF CERTIFICATION
Self-study can take you far, but if you want to practice professionally, certification matters. The AIFAS (All India Federation of Astrologers’ Societies) certification — founded in 2001 by Dr. Arun Bansal — is the most respected credential in Indian Jyotish education. It has four progressive levels, each with formal examinations.
HOW LONG DOES IT ACTUALLY TAKE?
Honest answer: 6–12 months for basic chart reading. 2–3 years for professional competence. Anyone telling you otherwise is either selling something or hasn’t practiced seriously.
