CBT for Defence Training: Why India’s Armed Forces Are Going Digital

Across the Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force, a quiet but critical transformation is taking place. Alongside the induction of advanced weapons systems and platforms, CBT for Defence Training has become a mandatory component of every major procurement. It is no longer a supplementary tool it is an operational deliverable.

The Scale of the Challenge

Modern defence systems are extraordinarily complex. A naval combat management system, for instance, may involve hundreds of subsystems, thousands of components, and intricate interdependencies between hardware and software. Third, a Symptoms and Fault Correlation module builds diagnostic thinking by mapping observable symptoms to root causes functioning as a digital expert system for troubleshooting.

Each of these modules is enriched with 2D and 3D animations, interactive views of line replaceable units, synchronized audio narration, and assessment question banks tied to specific systems.

CBT as Part of Training Aggregates

In Indian defence contracts, CBT for Defence Training is delivered as part of what are called Training Aggregates a comprehensive package that also includes technical manuals, operator and maintainer handbooks, training work modules, charts, video films, and interactive electronic technical manuals. These are mandated under JSS 0251 standards and explicitly specified in RFPs, SOTRs, and RFQs.

This means OEMs and system integrators supplying equipment to the Indian defence forces are contractually obligated to deliver high quality CBT alongside the physical systems. The quality and compliance of these deliverables directly impact project acceptance, payments, and long-term relationships with defence establishments.

The CBT advantages in a defence context extend beyond cost savings. A well-trained operator who has thoroughly internalized a system through CBT performs better, makes fewer errors, and recovers faster from unexpected situations. A maintainer who understands the system deeply through interactive digital training identifies faults more accurately and resolves them more efficiently.
