Dear Cancer,
It’s strange writing to something like you, a six-letter word with so much power. But here I am, trying to make sense of what you’ve done to me and my whole family, to someone we love with all our hearts. You’ve barged into our world and turned everything upside down.
I’ll admit, you were just a word to me before. A concept, a headline, a thing that happened to other people. I knew you were bad, sure. But I didn’t know you. Not like I do now. Now, you’ve become the shadow over my days, the ache in my chest, the constant swirl of questions in my head. You’re not just a word anymore. You’re a thief, stealing time, health, and sometimes even hope.
Watching someone you love face you is a kind of pain I can’t describe. To see someone who has always been your source of strength and comfort now needing you in ways you never imagined? It’s humbling. It’s terrifying. It’s heartbreaking. I can’t even count the number of nights I’ve cried, feeling helpless. I would give anything to take the pain away, to make it mine instead of theirs. But I can’t, and that’s the cruelest part.
You’ve made me learn things I never asked to know, about treatments, clinical trials, and what words like “remission” and “relapse” really mean. I’ve researched until my eyes hurt, desperate to find something, anything that could make a difference. But still, there are no easy answers, are there?
You’ve taught me so much about life, about hope, and about how fiercely we can fight for the people we love. I’ve seen strength that feels superhuman, even when it comes from the most exhausted places. I’ve learned that even in the darkest moments, we cling to hope like it’s the last light in the world. Because sometimes, it is.
In all of this, though, I’ve met the most amazing people through you. People who have shown up in ways I never could have imagined, and who have proven that true kindness and support are real. I’ve also learned who my real friends are, those who stand beside you when things get tough, no matter what. Most importantly, I’ve learned what true love really is. It’s the kind of love that doesn’t run when things get hard, the kind that sticks around, even when the days feel impossible. And for that, I’m grateful.
I hate you for what you’ve done, but I can’t deny you’ve also given me a new purpose. I want to fight you, not just for my loved one, but for everyone you’ve touched. I want to raise awareness for blood cancer, support research, and make sure no one has to feel as helpless as I have. If there’s one thing I can take from this, it’s that I can turn this pain into action. You don’t get the final word.
So here we are, Cancer. I don’t know what the future holds, but I know this: we’re still holding onto hope. And you? You’ll never take that from us.
Sincerely, Someone Who’s Not Giving Up
