The Psychologist’s Experiment That Changed How I Coach People

Picture this: a stranger knocks on your door and asks if you’d place a small road safety sticker in your window. A minor thing. You say yes.
A week later, they return—this time they want to install a large, ugly sign in your front yard.
Here’s what the 1966 experiment found: people who agreed to the sticker said yes to the sign at dramatically higher rates than those who were approached cold with the big request.
We call this the foot-in-the-door effect. And it tells us something fundamental about how human change actually works.

We don’t transform through grand decisions.
We transform through identity — the slow accumulation of small actions that shift how we see ourselves. When you agree to place a sticker, something quiet happens in your mind: you begin to see yourself as someone who does this sort of thing. And when that version of yourself is asked to install the sign, it doesn’t feel like a leap. It feels coherent.
This is not a modern insight. Aristotle grasped it more than two millennia ago.
In Nicomachean Ethics, he argued that virtue is not a trait you’re born with or a decision you make once. It is a practice. A habit. You become courageous by doing courageous things. You become disciplined by practising discipline — not by willing yourself into it, but by performing small acts of it, repeatedly, until they become you.
I explore this idea at length in my book Eudaimonia: The Highest Human Good. The ancient Greeks understood something about flourishing that our productivity-obsessed culture keeps forgetting: excellence is built from the bottom up, one small right action at a time.

So what does this have to do with finding a great personal coach?
Everything.
The coaches who produce lasting transformation are not the ones who hand you the most intense program. They’re the ones who understand that the real work is identity work — and that identity is changed through tiny, accepted commitments, not dramatic overhauls.
A great coach hands you the sticker first.
They ask before they prescribe. They find the smallest effective commitment — not the biggest thing you can theoretically endure, but the smallest thing that begins to shift how you see yourself. They’re honest rather than flattering. They’ve walked the path themselves. And they hold up a mirror over time, pointing you back toward the version of yourself you’re becoming, especially on the days you can’t see it.

At FightClub in Toronto, I work with martial arts and archery students at every stage — from complete beginners to advanced practitioners. The most important conversation I have with a new student isn’t about technique. It’s about identity. Who are you right now, and who do you want to become?
From there, we find the sticker.
Maybe it’s showing up twice a week. Maybe it’s committing to doing one thing differently. Maybe it’s simply deciding that physical discipline belongs in your life.
The sign comes later. It always does — when the identity has been built to carry it.
If you’re looking for a personal coach, stop searching for whoever promises the biggest result. Search for someone who can find your sticker.
That’s where eudaimonia begins. Read the full article below …
