I Didn’t Start a YouTube Channel to Become an Influencer

GenX Woman are reinventing themselves and finally figuring it out.

At 51, I started a YouTube channel.

Not because I wanted to become famous.

Not because I had a perfect niche.

And definitely not because I had extra time on my hands.

In fact, if you’ve ever seen my life, “extra time” is probably the funniest phrase in this entire article.

You see, I’m a Gen Xer, but my life doesn’t look like the typical Gen X story.

While many of my friends are becoming empty nesters, I have one child stepping into adulthood, a 9-year-old asking a thousand questions a day, and a toddler who somehow manages to create chaos in rooms I haven’t even entered yet.

Some days I’m helping a young adult navigate life decisions.

Some days I’m reviewing multiplication facts.

Some days I’m negotiating with a tiny human who has very strong opinions about the color of her cup.

Most days, I’m doing all three.

At the same time.

Somewhere in the middle of all that, I’m also a teacher.

And an author.

I’ve published novels about second chances, reinvention, and discovering that life can surprise us when we least expect it.

Maybe that’s why I finally decided to start a YouTube channel.

Because I’m living proof that life doesn’t unfold in a straight line.

At 51, I’m not winding down.

I’m not sitting in a quiet house wondering what’s next.

I’m packing lunches, writing books, grading papers, chasing toddlers, encouraging young adults, and trying to remember why I walked into the kitchen.

Twice.

Before noon.

What I realized is that there are a lot of people like me.

People living in the middle of multiple chapters at once.

People reinventing themselves while still carrying responsibilities.

People who have dreams they haven’t given up on, even though life is busy and messy and unpredictable.

That’s what my YouTube channel became.

Not a nostalgia channel.

Not a highlight reel.

A conversation.

About reinvention.

About resilience.

About humor.

About finding purpose in the middle of ordinary days.

About being Gen X and realizing that we don’t have to fit into anyone else’s timeline.

Some of us are sending kids to college.

Some of us are attending elementary school concerts.

Some of us are doing both.

And some of us are finally giving ourselves permission to pursue the dreams we’ve postponed for years.

For me, that dream included writing novels.

It included hitting “publish.”

And eventually, it included hitting “record.”

Every video I create is a reminder that it’s never too late to start something new.

Not when you’re 25.

Not when you’re 45.

And certainly not when you’re 51.

Life doesn’t stop evolving.

Neither should we.
