What Happens After the Game Ends

People think everything is about the game.

They focus on the score, the result, and what happens in those few minutes. But for me, the hardest part is not during the game.

It’s what comes after.

For me, this experience has been about learning how to deal with pressure, handle failure, and stay consistent even when things don’t go my way lessons that are building my discipline, resilience, and mindset for life beyond sports.

This year, we won our conference. It was a big moment. Everyone was celebrating, and it felt like all the work paid off. But a few weeks later, we played in the national championship.

And we lost.

We lost on a buzzer beater with 0.001 seconds left.

I still remember the moment after the game. No one really talked. Some teammates were just sitting quietly, looking at the water. Others had their heads down. No one knew what to say. It felt like everything stopped.

For me, I just kept replaying the last seconds in my head.

That feeling is hard to explain. In one second, everything changes. You go from being so close to winning it all to losing it. And for me, it was even harder because it was the second year in a row losing the national championship.

Mentally, it was one of the toughest moments I’ve had.

There were moments where I didn’t even want to think about the sport anymore. I felt frustrated, tired, and honestly, a little lost. When you put so much into something and still fall short, it makes you question everything.

Why am I doing this?

Is it worth it?

And I know I’m not the only one who feels this way. A lot of athletes go through this, especially at a high level. You give everything, and sometimes it’s still not enough.

But at the same time, I realized something.

I don’t really have a choice.

I have one more year left.

So now it’s about what I do next.

Do I stay in that feeling, or do I use it?

Right now, it’s time to keep grinding.

That’s the part people don’t see after the game ends. The mental battle. The decision to keep going even when you feel like stopping.

And at the same time, there is something else in my head.

The future.

Because being a college athlete doesn’t last forever.

I see other students doing internships, building experience, and preparing for their careers. And sometimes I think about that.

What if I’m not doing enough outside of my sport?

What happens after college?

For me, summers are not for internships. They are for training getting better, preparing for the next season, and trying to reach a higher level. But that also means I’m choosing a different path.

And I know many athletes feel this same pressure.

Trying to balance their sport now while also thinking about life after it ends.

Being an athlete is also a big part of my identity. For a long time, I’ve seen myself mainly as a water polo player. But moments like this make me think about who I am outside of the sport. At the same time, I realize that everything I’m learning here discipline, teamwork, handling pressure is not only for the pool. These are skills that will stay with me in other parts of life, like my career, my relationships, and how I deal with challenges in general.

In the end, being a college athlete is not only about winning or losing.

It is about the lessons that shape you along the way.

Through moments like losing the national championship, I’ve started to understand more about myself how I react to pressure, how I deal with failure, and how I decide to move forward when things don’t go as planned.

This experience is not just building me as an athlete, but also as a person.

I still don’t have all the answers about the future. But I know this journey is teaching me discipline, resilience, and how to handle uncertainty.

And maybe that’s the most important part.

Because in the end, it’s not just about the game.

It’s about who you become after it.
