AI: Avoiding the unavoidable until it’s no longer possible

I guess you could say I’m a neo-Luddite in terms of AI resistance.

I’ve only barely tried Chat GPT. I don’t want to feed too much information into the seas of data that AI is harvesting. Consolidation of bits and bytes that have ties to your IP address or identity makes for an uncomfortable pondering session.

At my job, the prospect of using AI to boost productivity and efficiency was available and becoming more of a legitimate option for the daily operations necessary for the work in which I’m involved. I researched options for our company and decided on one after trialing several products. This has helped tremendously with the ability to fully focus on the necessary aspects of the immediate work without having to worry or use energy on the mundane and technical piece of recording information that will be used in a post-session activity.

Still, I have avoided using anything else AI-related or any of the other publicly-available platforms for helping with other tasks.

Until yesterday.

I read about several platforms and decided on one that comes from a company I already am familiar with; I used another one of their products for data storage. Now that I’ve used this once for creating a document I needed, I’m not sure how much I’m going to utilize it on a daily basis. I’ve heard and know people who run questions by the AI platform of choice to determine behavior and to assist in making decisions.

The platform I chose centers privacy and this is why I went with it; since I’ve also used their other product, I already am familiar with their aesthetics, design, and functionality. Why am I fearing this behemoth technology?

Anything that has the potential to amass blistering power is a possible threat. I’ve been a fan of dystopian media for so long. I think this is the draw: imaging the worst possible scenario (catastrophizing) in order to prepare for the worst possible outcome. It’s simply preparing for the shitstorm. You might call it “mental prepping.” Does this make me a digital prepper?

I’m still hesitant to engage with the new AI agent at my fingertips. I downloaded the app too. Standing on the edge of a precipice is both thrilling and terrifying. Options for good or ill. Is this freedom or going deeper into a vast prison complex?

I think I know my first question for the AI agent.

The primary concern is whether or not the source is a reliable narrator. AI platforms are the new HAL in our daily digital exchanges.

Dread soaks through apocalyptic and dystopian works. Lack of trust and predictability are like a virus in these worlds. Autonomy is always threatened by the nefarious and mysterious powers-that-be.

What will our relationship with technology be like as we move forward? How much will we merge and evolve with our technological parallels?
