5 Methods to Sell, Persuade & Get People to Act

If you want to sell, persuade, and get people to do what you want, these are the five secret methods you need to know.
1.Flip the Status
You don’t need the best product, you need the best story. Most people assume the superior product always wins, but that’s rarely true. What actually wins is the product that makes the buyer feel superior. Find the part of your category that people quietly look down on the thing that feels cheap, basic, or embarrassing and reframe it as the sophisticated choice. Don’t fight the negative perception, just place your version in a completely different conversation. Nespresso didn’t make better coffee than Tacimo, whose technology was objectively more advanced. But Nespresso made you feel like a person of taste for choosing it. They changed the identity of the drinker, not the drink.
2. Hijack the Myth
The brain is lazy in the best possible way it prefers things it already recognizes. It doesn’t adopt new ideas, it adopts new versions of ideas it already has. So instead of trying to build a story from scratch, find the myth that’s already running in your customer’s mind. What do they already believe about who they are? What archetype do they secretly identify with? Attach your brand to that existing story and it won’t feel like an intrusion, it’ll feel familiar, like it belongs. Marlboro didn’t invent the American cowboy. That mythology had been alive for over a century rugged, free, uncompromising. Marlboro just moved in. One image of a man on a horse under an open sky was enough.
3. Open the Hidden Door
Most brands spend fortunes trying to get people to care. But the smarter move is to make people feel like they’ve discovered a world they didn’t know existed and that you’re the one who showed it to them. When you teach someone something that makes them feel smarter, more sophisticated, or more “in the know,” something shifts in how they see themselves. They go from being a casual consumer to someone who actually understands this world. And once someone has that new identity, the generic option is no longer available to them it’s beneath who they’ve become. Blue Bottle Coffee did this with a free video course on brewing the perfect cup. They weren’t selling coffee. They were opening a door to a world with its own language, standards, and taste hierarchy. People became loyal because Blue Bottle gave them something to become.
4. Build the Ritual
A ritual is a small, repeatable moment that makes someone feel like they belong to something. It doesn’t need to be grand or expensive, it just needs to be personal and consistent. When done right, the ritual stops being about the product and becomes the product itself. You’re not interrupting someone’s day anymore; you’re becoming part of it. Something they look forward to, a signal they send about themselves. Starbucks writes your name on the cup. Patagonia repairs your jacket instead of pushing you to buy a new one. These are very different brands, but they’re doing the same thing turning a forgettable transaction into a small ceremony. Look at your customer’s journey and find the dull moments: the confirmation email, the checkout page, the delivery notification. Every one of those is a missed ceremony waiting to happen.
5. Give Them a Superpower
This is the deepest method of all. The brands people are most loyal to aren’t necessarily the ones they like the most they’re the ones that made them believe something new about themselves. Not just more sophisticated or more belonging, but genuinely more capable. Before Stripe, accepting payments online required merchant accounts, bank approvals, contracts, and weeks of waiting. The system was essentially telling small developers: “This isn’t for you yet.” Stripe changed that with a few lines of code. Suddenly the same capability that used to require enterprise-level resources was available to anyone with a laptop. People didn’t just feel like they had a new tool they felt like a different kind of person. A builder. Someone who doesn’t wait for permission. That’s the superpower method. Ask yourself: what could my customer do after finding me that they genuinely believed they could not do before? Find that answer and you’re not selling a product anymore, you’re selling a new version of who they are.
