The valley, known for its breathtaking beauty and placid river walks, was abruptly turned into a scene of panic and chaos as gunshots tore through the calm air. A group of tourist busses making their way back from Aru Valley were ambushed close to the Lidder River’s bend, according to witnesses. A torrent of automatic rifle fire was fired indiscriminately by suspected militants from a Pakistani terror group. In a matter of seconds, the valley was filled with gunfire, grenade explosions, and screaming. "I saw masked men emerge from the woods," recalled Riyaz Ahmad, a local shopkeeper who watched the horror unfold from his roadside dhaba. I thought it was an army drill at first, but then the bullets started to fly. They were unforgiving. Quick action by security personnel positioned at a neighboring outpost resulted in a fierce gunfight that lasted for about forty minutes. Two German nationals, women, and children were among the 27 tourists who were dead by the time the gunfire stopped. Numerous others were injured, some of whom were in critical condition.
