I published my first novel, The Seduction Game, about two male idols in love, in December of last year. I am an African-American woman. It’s pretty clear I am writing ‘the other.’ So why did I write a book that isn’t about my gender or my race? Why did I write this particular book about K-pop idols in love?

I wanted to see beautiful Asian men treated beautifully. Treated like human beings. Seen as gorgeous, sexy, and worthy of desire. I wrote this book because I could not find a non-manga boys’ love that told the story of K-pop artists from their perspective. BDSM is simply another layer of spice and sexual excitement. As a female, African-American writer, I am familiar with the devastating side effects of being fetishized. I wrote this as a love story, not a fetish fantasy. I had multiple Asian Beta readers and conducted hours of research. There may be unintentional missed details, but the story and characters sprang from admiration, love, and the deepest respect.

The research was fun; I’m not gonna lie. I read books about Korean culture and watched endless BTS videos. I watched YouTube shorts and tutorials. I watched K-dramas and read boys’ love novels. I immersed myself in every way. And of course, I had the encouragement of N.K. Jemisin, who autographed a book for me last year. She said, and I quote, “You can write ‘the other.’ ”
