The UAE Approved Foundayo. Ozempic Clinics Don’t Want You to Read This.”

On April 3, 2026, the Emirates Drug Establishment approved Foundayo, making the UAE the second country in the world to greenlight the first once-daily weight loss pill that doesn’t require needles, fasting windows, or restricted water intake. The drug hits Dubai pharmacies in the first week of May. If you’ve been watching the Ozempic and Mounjaro conversation for the last two years, this is the moment that changes everything.

Here’s what I mean by that. Roughly 63% of adults in Dubai are overweight or obese. Injectable GLP-1s like Ozempic, Mounjaro, and Wegovy have dominated the weight loss conversation since 2023, but the injection barrier (needle anxiety, cold-chain storage, the weekly ritual) has kept most people from ever starting. A daily pill removes that barrier in one move.

I run a personal training company in Dubai. Over the last 18 months, we’ve worked with dozens of GLP-1 users across 40+ residential communities. What follows is what I’d tell anyone considering Foundayo before they walk into a clinic and get their first prescription.

What Foundayo actually is

Foundayo is Eli Lilly’s brand name for orforglipron, a small-molecule GLP-1 receptor agonist. The drug you inject (Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro) is a peptide. Peptides get destroyed by stomach acid, which is why they had to be shots. Foundayo is a completely different molecule that survives digestion, which is how it works as a pill.

The results from Eli Lilly’s Phase 3 trial: at the highest dose, participants lost an average of 12.4% of their body weight over 72 weeks. For context, that’s similar to the oral Wegovy pill (16.6%) but less than injectable Zepbound, which has pushed past 20% in multiple trials. So the pill trades maximum weight loss for maximum convenience.

Who is eligible in the UAE

Per Dubai-based specialists quoted in Khaleej Times this month, eligibility runs on two tracks:

  • BMI of 30 or above (clinical obesity)
  • BMI above 27 with at least one weight-related condition (type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, sleep apnea, or joint issues)

Prescriptions will come from endocrinologists, obesity specialists, or internal medicine doctors. Metabolic (formerly GluCare.Health) is the first provider outside the US to offer Foundayo in a structured program, and other Dubai clinics are expected to follow within weeks.

What it will cost

UAE pricing hasn’t been publicly announced yet. In the US, Foundayo starts at around $149 per month cash-pay for the lowest dose, going up to $349 for higher doses. Based on how Ozempic and Mounjaro have been priced in Dubai (AED 744 to AED 2,000+ per month), expect Foundayo to land somewhere in the AED 550 to AED 1,300 range monthly depending on dose. UAE health insurance does not currently cover GLP-1 medications for weight loss, so this will almost certainly be an out-of-pocket cost.

Now the part almost nobody is preparing patients for

Here’s what I want every Dubai resident thinking about Foundayo to understand. The weight you lose on a GLP-1, injectable or oral, is not all fat.

Research on semaglutide and tirzepatide shows that 25 to 40% of the weight people lose on GLP-1 therapy comes from lean muscle mass. That’s not a minor detail. Muscle drives your metabolic rate. Less muscle means your body burns fewer calories at rest. Less muscle means worse body composition even when the scale number drops. And the biggest consequence is this: most patients regain 60 to 70% of the weight within 12 months of stopping the medication. When they regain, they regain as fat, not muscle.

I’ve watched this play out in person with clients who came to us after stopping injectable GLP-1s. They were lighter than they’d been in years. They also had less muscle than they’d had in a decade. Six months later, many had gained most of the weight back, and the body composition looked worse than when they started.

The fix is not complicated

If you’re starting Foundayo in May, or any GLP-1, here’s what needs to happen alongside the medication:

Resistance training, three to four times per week, from day one. Not cardio. Strength training specifically, because that’s what signals the body to hold onto muscle during a calorie deficit. This is non-negotiable if you want to keep what you lose.

Protein intake of 1.6 to 2.2g per kg of lean body mass. For a 75kg adult, that’s 120g+ of protein daily. When the pill kills your appetite, hitting that number feels impossible. Protein shakes exist for exactly this reason.

Scale back cardio. Most people assume more cardio equals more weight loss. On a GLP-1, calories are already extremely low. Adding hours of cardio just accelerates muscle loss. Two short zone-2 sessions per week is plenty. The heavy lifting is what protects your body composition.

Plan for the off-ramp. GLP-1s are long-term medications, not 12-week solutions. Even Metabolic, the clinic rolling out Foundayo in Dubai, is positioning it explicitly as a maintenance drug for patients coming off injectables. You need a plan for what happens when you stop taking it, and that plan is built on habits, not medication.

Foundayo vs Ozempic vs Mounjaro: quick comparison

For anyone trying to figure out where Foundayo fits:

  • Ozempic (semaglutide injection): Most studied, weekly shot, about 15% weight loss
  • Mounjaro (tirzepatide injection): Strongest weight loss among approved drugs, weekly shot, around 22% weight loss
  • Foundayo (orforglipron pill): Daily tablet, no food or timing restrictions, around 12.4% weight loss at highest dose
  • Oral Wegovy (semaglutide pill): Daily tablet but must be taken on empty stomach with limited water, around 16.6% weight loss

If maximum weight loss is the goal, injectables still win. If convenience and simplicity matter more, Foundayo is a category-defining option.

The bigger picture for Dubai

The UAE’s Emirates Drug Establishment moved on Foundayo faster than almost any other regulator in the world. That’s not a coincidence. With 63% of adults here overweight or obese and diabetes rates sitting at 15.5%, the public health pressure is enormous. Expect Dubai clinics to start promoting Foundayo aggressively through May and June. Expect a surge of first-time GLP-1 users who never would have started with an injection.

If that’s you, the worst thing you can do is treat this as a solo project. The best outcomes I’ve seen in GLP-1 users come from treating the medication as one piece of a three-part system: the drug, structured strength training, and accountability on the nutrition side.

Final thought

Foundayo is genuinely good news for a lot of people who’ve been locked out of GLP-1 therapy by needle anxiety or complexity. It’s also not a magic bullet, and anyone selling it as one is setting patients up for the rebound.

If you’re in Dubai and you want a training plan built specifically around Foundayo or any GLP-1 protocol, we run a program for exactly this at Athleaders. Our three-person model pairs every client with a personal trainer, a clinical dietitian, and an accountability coach. 245+ Google reviews, training across 40+ Dubai communities, no gym membership required.

Whatever you decide, start the resistance training before you start the pill. Your future self, twelve months after your last dose, will be grateful.
