Lydia Everwyn: Private Capital in a More Selective World
Private capital is entering a more selective phase. For me, that does not mean opportunity has disappeared. It means the standard for recognizing opportunity has become higher.

When markets are more crowded and capital is more cautious, the strongest decisions often begin with restraint. A manager must ask whether a business can carry its financing structure, whether cash flow is durable enough for pressure, whether the exit path is realistic, and whether the valuation leaves room for error.
This is why selectivity matters. Private capital should not be measured only by how quickly money is deployed. It should be measured by the quality of the decisions made before deployment. A patient strategy can still fail if the underwriting is weak. A long holding period can still become a problem if liquidity was poorly planned.
I believe the next phase of private markets will reward three qualities.
First, disciplined underwriting. Assumptions should be tested before capital moves, not after conditions become difficult.
Second, liquidity awareness. Private markets are long-term by design, but investors still need a clear view of timing, exits, and portfolio flexibility.
Third, manager judgment. In a selective market, access is not enough. The real difference comes from process, governance, and the ability to say no.
For long-term investors, the message is not to avoid private capital. The message is to approach it with clearer standards. Private markets can still support durable value creation, but only when capital is matched with the right structure, time horizon, and risk discipline.
A more selective world is not a weaker world. It is simply a world where better judgment matters more.
