Why We Built the TTML AI Software Report 2026

There has never been a better time to be interested in AI.
Almost every day another tool appears promising to save time, replace hours of work or completely transform the way we run our businesses. It’s exciting, but it also creates a problem. Choosing the right software has become harder than ever.
Over the past few months I’ve spent countless hours researching, testing and comparing AI tools for The Tool Money Lab. The more software I looked at, the more I noticed something strange. So many reviews online seemed to say exactly the same thing. They listed features, repeated the company’s own marketing language and finished by telling you every product was “highly recommended.”
As someone who would actually be paying for these subscriptions myself, that wasn’t enough.
I wanted to know whether the software genuinely made my work easier. Was it intuitive? Was customer support helpful? Did it actually save time once the novelty had worn off? Were there hidden limitations behind the pricing? Those are the things that matter when you’re deciding whether to spend your own money.
That became the reason for creating The Tool Money Lab.
From the beginning, the idea wasn’t to produce hundreds of generic reviews. The goal was to build a resource that people could actually trust. Sometimes a tool deserves praise. Sometimes it doesn’t. Either way, readers deserve an honest opinion based on practical use rather than marketing claims.
As more reviews and comparisons were published, another idea started to develop. Individual reviews are useful, but they only tell part of the story. Looking across dozens of products, you begin to notice wider trends. Some categories are moving incredibly quickly, while others are starting to mature. New companies appear almost overnight and established names continue to improve at an incredible pace.
That’s when the idea for an annual report was born.
Rather than creating another “Top 10 AI Tools” article, I wanted to produce something that looked at the industry as a whole. A report that brought together everything we’d learned through our reviews, comparisons and research, and presented it in one place.
The first edition covers the biggest trends we’re seeing across AI software today, highlights standout products, explains our review methodology and shares some of the observations that surprised us most during testing. It isn’t intended to be the final word on AI software. Quite the opposite. The industry changes so quickly that this report will continue evolving throughout the year.
My hope is that this becomes something readers look forward to every year. A snapshot of where AI software stands today and where it appears to be heading tomorrow. As The Tool Money Lab grows, so will the depth of the research behind each edition.
This is only the first report. There will undoubtedly be things we’ll improve, categories we’ll expand and tools we’ll add in future editions. That’s part of the process. I’d much rather build something that evolves over time than publish something once and never touch it again.
If you’re currently trying to decide which AI tools are genuinely worth your time and money, I hope you’ll find it useful.

I’d genuinely love to hear your thoughts and suggestions. If there’s a tool, category or trend you think deserves more attention in future editions, please let me know. The report will only get better with feedback from the people who actually use these tools every day.
