Focusing on Micro nutrients & Macros After Bariatric Surgery

CALORIE

Calorie!! What comes to your mind when you hear it anytime, anywhere? Diet, loss weight, healthy lifestyle, good health, low intake, and many more right! In reality, a calorie is much way broader term.

A calorie is an energy, the amount of energy food provides when we eat. When we eat food it provides certain nutrients, some macronutrients, which keep us active all day.

On many food items, macronutrients are measured in grams, this clearly shows how much amount of carbohydrate, protein, and fat is required to our body as compared to micronutrients. These micronutrients do not provide energy to the body, they act as co-enzymes for the production of energy.

Whenever we think of diet, calorie always sounds like an as bad word. Isn’t it? But to reduce weight low-calorie diet is necessary with a good exercise routine. Most necessary than is the quality of calories you consume. The calorie must be a mixture of both macro & micronutrients.

Today every third person is worried about calorie intake. Even there are several applications in the market to help you count this. As it is said, half knowledge is always dangerous. Similarly just knowing the count won’t work, how this calorie looks and help, knowing this is very important. So before using any application, seeking guidance from an authorized dietician is very necessary.

For example, everybody has a different requirement. If a person wants to gain muscle weight they need to increase protein intake. But the source of protein also matters here. How it will be absorbed in the body depends on the source. The amount body absorbs after having protein is the bioavailability of the protein.

Bioavailability is simply the rate at which protein can be used by our body. As research shows animal protein has a higher bioavailability of protein than plan protein force.

Suppose if a Bariatric person is training for a marathon, he would require more carbohydrates in his diet, to help him with instant energy for long races. Carbohydrate intake is still a little controversial when it comes to maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

As per research 130 grams of carbohydrates per day provides the necessary amount of glucose to the brain to function without breaking fats and proteins for new glucose production.

When there are fewer carbohydrates present in the body it gets broken into protein and fats for the formation of new glucose which is called glycogenesis. Carbohydrates in the body should be limited, but not should be excluded to maintain normal cell activity.

Research shows 130 grams of carbohydrate is enough to maintain normal cell activity. If a Bariatric person consumes more than recommended, it may lead to an increase in triglyceride levels in the blood and slowed weight loss.

When consuming carbohydrates, the bariatric person also needs to maintain the quality of carbohydrates. The GI & ADA should be always considered while preparing a diet for a post-bariatric person.

Food with high GI leads to a higher risk of excess calories & that with lower GI causes a lower increase in blood sugar. Baritiac people should work on their diet with well-authorized dieticians. Even dieticians should provide diet carefully distributing macronutrients in intake. This will help the patient live a long healthy life and promote long-term weight loss successfully.
