Warmth in Shadow

I do enjoy every opportunity I get to examine my favorite works. Today is no exception. I’ve decided to engage with James Van Der Zee’s Nude, Harlem.

This image resonates deeply with me. It evokes a range of universal experiences; the vulnerability of being exposed, yet the desire to remain close to warmth. The subject sits before a fireplace, unclothed but not cold, seemingly lost in thought. I know what it feels like to stare blankly into something while imagining that clarity or abundance will eventually rise out of the drishti. The subject’s expression mirrors that daydreaming state.

Van Der Zee masterfully captures light in this photograph. The way illumination plays across the subject’s body gives prominence to her shadow. It begins to seemingly represent a kind of shadow self, haunting and poetic in presence.

Nude, Harlem was created during one of the most profound cultural eras in American history, circa 1923. In keeping with its title, it stands as a visual descendant of the Harlem Renaissance; freeing, cloying, and artistically unmatched.

I chose to write about this piece today because I haven’t stopped thinking about it since I first encountered it. I discovered it during my first trip to New York City. It was featured in some literature I found at the Met, and I instantly fell in love with its rawness. At the time, it felt completely out of place and almost radical for a generation reeling in the face of rising conservatism. And yet, it stayed with me.

I now experience this piece as a woman who rarely sees her perspective ever captured by a male artist. But Van Der Zee came close. There’s a truth in this image, an honesty that transcends time and gender. That’s why I keep returning to it.
