Lay It on the Line.
A Poem by Sierra N. Warren
Art by: Jean Michel Basquiat PIECE: ‘Phooey’ 1982
Shall I come, or shall I go?
Maybe I may never know.
Of all the highs and all the lows,
nothing stopped this one-woman show.
So hold on to me tight,
enough be gone by tonight.
Lost in the scenes,
drowned by the lights.
Through all of the bad days,
and all of the sad days,
all of the “pick up your face, put on a mask” days,
all of the “don’t be down, wear a smile” days.
This shit is wild, aye.
It all felt so fast-paced.
I don’t know why.
you gotta see me in a bad way.
Maybe I loved you in a fast way.
Maybe I lost me in a bad way.
Either way, it ain’t work out.
Now I sit in one place,
in a bad space,
full of doubt,
while I only exist from day to day.
As without, so within,
you can’t waste this space again.
It was real, and it was safe,
’til you let me go away.
To a place you’ll never see,
only because you never believed.
So shall I go, or shall I stay?
Would it all just go away?
Or will it slowly fade away,
while I miss you day to day?
Will I waste your time?
Or maybe you, mine?
Or might we risk it all.
when we lay it on the line?
