SpaceX Launches Nova-C Lander to Moon’s Southern Polar Region
SpaceX successfully launched Intuitive Machine’s Nova-C lander to the Moon, marking NASA’s second endeavor to land a private spacecraft on the lunar surface.
The spacecraft embarked on its journey to space on a Falcon-9 rocket, gracefully navigating through the atmosphere as it parted ways with the launch fairing. Designed to showcase the private company’s landing capabilities, the spacecraft aims to validate its ability to deliver cargo and technology to the lunar surface.
The launch, originally planned for Valentine’s Day, was rescheduled for Thursday following complications with fuel loading a day prior. NASA explained that “due to abnormal methane temperatures prior to methane loading, the IM-1 mission to the Moon has been postponed.”
What lies ahead for Nova-C in space?
The Falcon-9 has been assigned the mission of placing the spacecraft on a direct trajectory to the Moon, mirroring the path taken by NASA during the Apollo 11 mission, which carried astronauts like Neil Armstrong to the lunar surface. This trajectory entails nearly a week’s journey for the spacecraft to reach its destination and land on the Moon.
The Nova-C spacecraft features 3D-printed engines, which will be activated in the frigid conditions of space to maneuver the spacecraft during its landing mission.
