Bunker Hill Story 5
The Ammunition That Ran Out Before the Courage Did

The Ammunition That Ran Out Before the Courage Did By Kevin J. W. Driscoll © 2026
By late afternoon, the hill was a furnace.
The sun hung heavy over Boston Harbor, its light diffused through smoke so thick it turned gold to gray. The air was a mixture of powder, sweat, and disbelief. The colonists had held through two assaults, and now the third was coming — slower, heavier, deliberate.
Colonel Prescott could feel the exhaustion in his bones. His sword arm ached. His voice was hoarse from shouting orders. Around him, the men were running low on powder, their pouches nearly empty, their faces streaked with soot.
Josiah Breed crouched behind the barricade, shaking the last grains of powder from his horn. They fell like sand. “That’s it,” he said quietly.
Prescott nodded. “Make it count.”
Below, the British line advanced again — red coats moving through the smoke, bayonets glinting, drums beating a rhythm that sounded less like triumph now and more like inevitability.
The colonists fired what they had left. Each shot was a declaration, not a tactic. The hill erupted again, but the volleys were thinner now, scattered, desperate.
Josiah fired his last musket ball and watched it strike a British officer squarely in the chest. The man fell backward, arms flung wide, sword still in hand. Josiah felt no satisfaction. Only the strange calm that comes when there’s nothing left to do but wait.
Around him, men were shouting for powder. “I’m out!” “Nothing left!” “Does anyone have a charge?”
Prescott moved among them, steady as ever. “Hold your ground,” he said. “Use what you have.”
What they had were stones, bayonets, fists.
The British climbed higher. The smoke swallowed the hill. The sound of musket fire gave way to the clash of steel and the thud of bodies.
Josiah swung his musket like a club, striking at a redcoat who had reached the barricade. The man fell, and Josiah stumbled backward, his breath ragged. He looked around — the line was breaking, but not collapsing. The men were still fighting, still refusing to run.
Prescott stood at the crest, sword raised, shouting for the men to fall back in order. “Retreat! But don’t run!”
It was a strange kind of command — to leave without surrendering.
The colonists began to withdraw, step by step, carrying their wounded, dragging their empty muskets. The British surged forward, claiming the hill, but their victory was hollow. The ground was littered with their own dead.
Josiah reached the base of the hill and turned back. The smoke was clearing now, revealing the wreckage — the earthworks torn apart, the bodies scattered, the flagpole snapped in half.
Prescott joined him, breathing hard, his sword still in hand. “We gave them a lesson,” he said quietly.
Josiah nodded. “We lost the hill.”
Prescott looked at him. “A hill’s just dirt. What matters is what they learned climbing it.”
The British had taken the ground, yes. But they had paid for every inch in blood.
As the colonists retreated toward Cambridge, the sun dipped low, turning the harbor into a sheet of fire. The city beyond was silent. Even the British guns had stopped.
Josiah walked beside Prescott, his musket dragging in the dirt. “Do you think they’ll come again?”
Prescott shook his head. “Not soon. They’ve seen what it costs.”
Josiah looked back one last time. The hill was still smoking, the air shimmering with heat. He thought of the men who had fallen there — men who had stood their ground until the ground itself gave way.
He realized that courage wasn’t something you ran out of. It was something you spent, like powder, until there was nothing left but the echo of it.
And that echo, he knew, would last.
The British would call it victory. The colonists would call it proof.
History would call it Bunker Hill.
But for the men who had fought there, it was something simpler — the moment they discovered what they were made of.
Not soldiers. Not heroes. Just people who refused to run.
And sometimes, that was enough.
