Prayer: A Gateway To Honour

You who fear the Lord, praise him! All you descendants of Jacob, honor him! Revere him, all you descendants of Israel! [Psalm 22:23 NIV]

Burning bushes that don’t actually burn. Smoke atop a mountain. Loud trumpets. Tongues of fire. Transfigurations. The manifest presence of God is definitely awe-inspiring. In the presence of His Holiness and magnificence one can hardly be familiar or lack reverence.

A common thread though all these awe-inspiring moments is that people were seeking to speak or make contact with God. They were praying. When we pray, we can encounter God in diverse and intimate ways. Experience facets of Him and uncover more of His glory. Our desire to seek His face unlocks the potential to know more of Him.

The more we know of God, the more in awe of His person and His love we will become. When we pray with a genuine desire to communicate, our relationship with God deepens. Thus we are less likely to treat Him flippantly or be careless about the things of God. Prayer guards our awe and reverence for God.

The very act of praying keeps us humble. It requires that you acknowledge your insufficiency and need for God. It turns your gaze outward unto His grace. Prayer magnifies our dependency on God, and helps us to surrender our will.

Subsequently, it ensures that we always honour God and do not become too familiar. Familiarity breeds disrespect and negligence. We see it often in our human relationships. We take for granted the things and the people we have because we always have them. Yet in prayer we gain the knowledge that there is more to know and uncover in God. Thus we cannot become familiar with the little that we know.

Prayer has evolved from priests, practicing specific rituals and going into God’s presence under specific circumstances into an invitation by grace, free for all buffet. Yet the God we are praying to has never changed. He is still deserving of our awe, respect, reverence and humility as we approach Him.

Prayer, especially consistent prayer, builds a reflexive habit of honoring God. By dedicating and faithfully committing to consistent prayer, we honor God with our time and our energy. It is an avenue for bringing our supplications before God and thus honoring Him as our Head and Provider. Prayer is an avenue for honoring God as our protector as we bring our fears before Him. Prayer also serves as an avenue for honouring God with our thanksgiving as we see all that He has done for us.

Dedicate time to pray each day. As you pray, remember the King before whom you stand and the throne room you so freely enter. As you pour out your heart, honour Him as Lord, guide, protector, friend, lover of your soul. As you spend time seeking His voice and training your gaze on Him, honor God with your time and your energy.

Do not neglect prayer. Invest in it. Commit faithfully to it. Determine that you will speak to your Father everyday. Celebrate Him. Honour Him.

Prayer: Lord, I am in awe of You and all I’ve come to know of You. Yet there is more to uncover, deeper to wade. Help me to not grow familiar with the little I have seen. Holy Spirit quicken my spirit that I shall hunger for more of God, and as I continue to pray that I shall honour Him continually. Amen.
