The bad, the worse and the ugly

The Boys had its final season from the 8th of April to the 20th of May and there was a lot hype and excitement surrounding the final season, not only because the comics have a wild ending but also because of the differences between the show and the comics. A lot of people including me were excited to see how close they would stick to the ending from the comics and what cool things they would add to the show and most of all a final face off between Butcher and Homelander to pay off their scene were they talk about fighting to the death and scorching earth.
The season started off incredibly slow and at times it seemed like it was maybe picking up the pace, but that never really happened, the slow pace was kept trough out the season up until the final episode which made the ending feel rushed, i will get back to that later. There were good episodes and most of the episodes are enjoyable when you watch it for the first time, until you start thinking about the plot and how its not really moving along at the speed and pace it should. Episode 1–5 are pretty good and you feel like it could still be on track to not have a feeling of rushing trough things just to end the show. But this slow pacing adds weird choices like killing Frenchie before the last episode to try and make it sad and impactful but it doesn't land or hit that hard at all especially after you watch the final episode. In the comics both Kimiko and Frenchie die but for some reason they changed that to try and have some hard hitting impact which doesnt land in my opinion and just sours the ending. We also miss out on something everyone wanted to see which is a final insane fight between Butcher and Homelander until both hit the floor, instead we get a dull stall fight until Kimiko can use her Soldier Boy like anti supe blast and then Homelander just turns into some pathetic being, dont get me wrong Homelander has always been insane and pathethic deep down which he knew and its one of the reasons he wanted everyone to admire him and be unstoppable. But rushing trough the death of Frenchie and then making the final “fight” something like a few goons beating up a guy really sours the whole season. The rest of the final episode is kind of like the comics, Butcher wants to kill all supes and forces Hughie to kill him, Hughie and Annie stay together and Annie is pregnant at the end, a big difference from the comics is that MM is alive and adopts William, Kimiko is alive but alone. Speaking of Kimiko, the relationship between her and Frenchie also doesnt hit that hard since they just get a chance near the start of the season but in the middle they kind of seem to split up or at least have some distance making Frenchie’s death even less impactful, if Kimiko gets to survive so shuold have Frenchie so they could have tried to work things out and we would have gotten to see Butcher and Homelander fight to the death which would have been way cooler. That said there are good moments trough out the last season, there are good moments and a few hightlights here and there, but overall its a lacking season and not a fitting close to the show, most of the issue comes down to pacing, how up until episode 7 they take it very slow and then all of a sudden speed up and rush trough things. If they wanted to give everyone apart from Butcher and Homelander a happy ending they should have done so or had a different pacing, maybe if Frenchie died in the first 1–3 episodes his death would have been more impactful instead of being whatever, there was also this subplot of Soldier Boy hating Homelander but also trying to be a good father to him because thats what Stormfront aka Clara Vought would have wanted even though Soldier Boy said he doesnt care that much earlier on when he is looking for V1 with Homelander, but later when Soldier Boy sees a video of Homelander and Stormfront doing some spicy things he gets pissed and says that Homelander doesnt deserve the V1. Not to mention that Soldier Boy in season 3 says he was in love in Crimson Countess and went trough everything the Russians did to him because he thuoght she would save him and he wanted a family with her. The final season of the boys has good moments but overall its a bad season, with the plot flopping around the place with things that happened in the previous seasons like ignoring the fact that Soldier Boy was in love with Crimson Countess and now was always in love with Stormfront or how he hated Homelander, forgetting or just ignoring the payoff between Homelander and Butcher and the epic fight to the end they could have had, the bad pacing and combine all of that into a smoothie and you get quite a bad taste.
That said, season 1–3 are genuinely very good, season 4 has a weird start but then gets better, but sadly season 5 couldnt deliver. This is all just my opinion and if you feel differently let me know and let me know why you maybe found season 5 to be a good fitting end to the show. Thank you for reading, spread kindness, spread positivity, be nice to each other and say something nice to someone you care about it just might make their day better. Until next time!
