When the Wind Blows From the East

It’s Time to leave, because that’s the wind that carries the monsters.

When the wind blows from the true East, the first droplets of rain will feel benign, but you will have the flu exactly three days after.

And if you get the flu, you must stay, for those droplets of rain choose only the most worthy. Only the most worthy would be abandoned in their delirium as they see things they shouldn’t — things that are more real than what the others perceive.

You must stay until the monsters ride in atop the currents — giant, grotesque creatures, formless as the mist yet capable of devouring entire flocks and herds.

They will flood through homes, taking what is unlawful, leaving trinkets where they’re most needed, but most of all, counting. Counting everything, everywhere. Restoring balance to a world full of monsters of the land.

And if you think you can escape with your most valuable possessions, think again. Because the people with the flu, they are witnesses. And the witnesses see everything and hold the scores. They know what the winds took and what they spared and why.

And when the winds return toward the East, you will know, not because of the wind vane but because of the all-pervading peace they leave in their wake. That peace will smell like the scent of your mother’s arms when you were a wee babe, and you will recognize it.

When this comes to pass, know that the monsters of the wind have moved on and the monsters of the land have been brought to their knees.

And yet, I will ask you: Are the monsters of the East truly monstrous?
