As Coetzee experiences a hamstring ache, South Africa’s fast-bowling stocks decline

Gerald Coetzee, who was anticipated to be selected as Anrich Nortje’s replacement in the Champions Trophy team, was left out of the Johannesburg Super Kings XI to play the Pretoria Capitals in the SA20, further hurting South Africa’s bowling capabilities. In his first competitive match since the Test match against Sri Lanka in Durban, where he suffered a groin injury, Coetzee participated in JSK’s final game against the Super Giants of Durban at Kingsmead. After recovering from a 12-week conditioning block and a hip niggle, Coetzee was ruled out for the remainder of the international summer. Between a domestic match for the Titans in October and a match at the MLC in July (his only match in the competition), he did not play any cricket. He then played in all four of South Africa’s Twenty20 International matches against India, looking faster and more fit than before. He took 4 for 85 in the opening Test match against Sri Lanka before being sidelined once more. Coetzee returned two days ago and claimed two wickets for thirty-two in three overs.

Rob Walter, South Africa’s white-ball coach, also stated that Coetzee was eligible for a Champions Trophy spot but was passed over in favor of the more seasoned Nortje. Given that Nortje is now out due to a back issue, Coetzee is anticipated to travel to Pakistan if healthy. The only person who can choose the team, Walter, will have to sift through the reserves if he is unable to.

Given that the team already has Kagiso Rabada, Lungi Ngidi, Marco Jansen, and Wiaan Mulder, Walter may need to shift away from that totally or look to 18-year-old tearaway Kwena Maphaka or South Africa’s most recent ODI cap, Corbin Bosch, if he wants pace. Ottneil Baartman, a death-bowling expert, is an additional choice because nearly all of the other contenders are currently injured.

Lizaad Williams is recuperating from knee surgery, while Nandre Burger will not be playing this summer due to a lower-back stress fracture. Due to a hamstring issue, Daryn Dupavillon, a player with the Pretoria Capitals, is also unable to play in the SA20.

Dupavillon is this summer’s eighth injured seamer. The others were Williams, Baartman, Burger, Nortje (broken toe, then back), Coetzee, Mulder (broken finger), and Ngidi (groin). With the exception of Williams, Nortje, Burger, and now Coetzee, everyone has resumed their activities.
