The Creature in My Mind
The Creature in My Mind

I first saw it when I was twelve. Not in the woods. Not in an abandoned house. But inside my own room. At first, it appeared only in the corners of my vision—a dark shape made of shadows and tangled lines. Whenever I looked directly at it, it disappeared. I told myself it was my imagination. But every night, it came closer. Weeks passed, and the creature began to change. It wasn’t just watching me anymore. It was growing. Its body looked as if it had been drawn with thousands of frantic black strokes. It had no face, no eyes, and yet I always felt it staring at me. One night, I finally gathered the courage to speak. What do you want from me? The creature tilted its head. Then, for the first time, it answered. I’m waiting. For what? I whispered.
"For you to notice me. A chill ran through my body. I can see you right now. The creature shook its head. No. You see my shape. You don’t see what I am. Every night after that, it returned. And every night, it grew larger. Soon it filled the corners of my room. Then the walls. Then the ceiling. The more afraid I became, the stronger it seemed. One evening, after a terrible day, I broke down crying. I felt lost, exhausted, and completely alone. The creature appeared beside me. But this time, it wasn’t threatening. It simply sat there. Silent. Watching. And suddenly, I understood. The creature wasn’t a monster. It was every fear I had ignored. Every regret. Every painful memory. Every doubt I had buried deep inside myself. It had never been hunting me. It had been following me. Waiting for me to face it. The moment I accepted that truth, something strange happened. The tangled lines began to fade. The darkness became lighter. And the creature slowly disappeared.
Before vanishing completely, it whispered one final sentence: The things you refuse to face will always look like monsters. Years later, I still remember it. Sometimes, on difficult nights, I think I see its shadow again. But now I’m no longer afraid. Because I know what it really is. And I know that the darkest monsters are often born inside our own minds.
