Blog Post 5.17.26

Sitting outside earlier this week, I could hear the kids playing at the nearby elementary school. Their screams were shrill and loud. I could hear their instructor's mumbled voice try to quiet them down but those excited kids’ yelling escalated again. It reminds me of how I’ve been feeling for months— like I could just scream!

I have been trying not to give too much oxygen in my writing to the madness that is our current administration. There are folks on Substack and YouTube and even here on Medium doing an outstanding job keeping everyone informed of the truth on an almost-hourly basis and I have no inclination to wade into that pool. But in watching this shit show play on, I am just wanting to scream! I am holding my breath while waiting for November, crying from a distance as more and more damage is being done to the country. Enough is enough! I have to speak up and join the choir of those already shouting “FIRE!!”

Martin Luther King, Jr., wrote in Letter from Birmingham Jail, “In the end, we will remember not the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends.” Desmond Tutu said, “If you are neutral in situations of injustice, you have chosen the side of the oppressor.” And famously, Edmund Burke is credited with the idea that “The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.” The choice to remain quiet no longer exists. The time to speak up and speak out is now!

But what difference can a 64-year-old divorced woman make? How do my words factor into the bigger picture? I don’t know exactly. I do believe, though, with my blog on Medium and my Substack page, I am adding to the collective energy, the collective voice, of all those who are fighting for good. I am adding my voice to encourage and support those on the front lines of the battle. I will no longer be silent, will not choose the side of the oppressor, and refuse to do nothing; I will speak! I will scream, if necessary!

We are all in this together!
