How to make the switch from ChatGPT to Claude in 30 minutes

I used ChatGPT for over a year. Then I made the switch in 30 minutes.

And I felt a little dumb that I waited so long.

Here is what happened.

I was loyal to ChatGPT the way people are loyal to a restaurant they have been going to for years. Not because it is the best. Just because it is familiar. I knew how it worked. I knew what to expect. Starting over somewhere new felt like effort I did not want to spend.

But Claude kept coming up. In newsletters. In Reddit threads. In DMs from readers of this very newsletter.

So last month, I finally made the switch. And I want to be honest with you: I expected it to take days. A whole painful migration. Re-explaining everything. Starting from zero.

It took 30 minutes.

Here is exactly how to do it

Step 1: Export your ChatGPT data

Go to ChatGPT. Open Settings, then Data Controls, then click Export Data. They send you an email with a download link. One thing to know: it can take up to 24 hours to process, and the link expires after 24 hours. Do not sleep on it when it arrives.

Step 2: Download Claude

Head to claude.com/download and install the desktop app. When you pick your model, go with Opus 4.6. That is the version where Claude actually earns its reputation.

Step 3: Set up your workspace

Open the Cowork tab in Claude. Connect it to a folder on your computer. This is where everything changes. Claude can read files from that folder and use them as permanent context every single time you talk to it.

Step 4: Build your context files

This is the step most people skip. Do not skip it.

Create four simple .md files in your workspace folder:

• my-context.md: Paste your reformatted ChatGPT export here. Claude now knows your history.
• about-me.md: Who you are. What you do. What goals you are working toward.
• voice-profile.md: How you write. What tone you want. What you hate seeing in AI output.
• anti-ai-style.md: Specific rules. Phrases Claude should never use. Patterns to avoid. The more specific, the better.

Step 5: Start every conversation with this one line

“Read my files. Ask me questions before you start.”

That is it. Every new chat, Claude pulls in your context and actually understands you before it says a word. No re-explaining. No generic responses. No “Certainly! Here is a comprehensive overview.”

Why I think people are finally making this move

It is not that ChatGPT is bad. It is that Claude is different in a way that matters.

Claude does not just answer questions. When you set it up properly, it works like a colleague who already knows your business, your voice, your standards. You stop feeling like you are typing into a search box and start feeling like you are actually working with something.

The context file system is what does it. Most AI users treat these tools like a fresh conversation every single time. The people getting the most out of Claude are treating it like a long-term working relationship.

That shift in thinking changes everything.

If you have been sitting on the fence about switching, the friction you are imagining is bigger than the friction that actually exists.

30 minutes. That is all it took.
