Sorry, Rancho. Chatur Had a Point.

Every classroom has that one student. The one who makes teachers question their career choices. Ours had one too. He wasn’t a bully. He simply had a rare talent for saying the one thing that could turn a serious lecture into an unexpected standup. One day, our teacher asked him a question from the textbook. He stood up and answered. Word. For. Word. Not a comma out of place. If textbooks gave awards for loyalty, he would’ve won one. The teacher frowned. "So... you mugged it up?" The poor guy tried to explain that he had understood the concept. He had just memorized the wording because he wanted to answer perfectly. Unfortunately, the verdict had already been delivered. The teacher took a deep breath. "This won’t help you in life." "You don’t understand concepts." "People who only memorize never succeed." And then came the nuclear weapon of every Indian classroom... 3 Idiots. "Look at Rancho," the teacher declared. "He understood concepts." "Don’t become Chatur." At this point, most of us mentally closed our notebooks because we knew the lecture would now last longer than the actual class. Then the class comedian raised his hand. "But sir..." The teacher nodded confidently. "If you’ve watched 3 Idiots carefully..." "We have." "...then you’ll remember that Chatur also got a top job, earned a lot of money, had a beautiful wife, and seemed pretty happy." A pause. "So... wasn’t he successful too?" Silence. The kind of silence where even the ceiling fan sounds loud. Our teacher looked as though his own PowerPoint presentation had started arguing against him. For the first time in recorded classroom history... The lecture needed a lecture. Years later, I still think about that moment. Here is the thing. We often borrow someone else’s definition of success without realizing it. Since 3 Idiots is Rancho’s story, we naturally cheer for Rancho’s version of life. But imagine the movie from Chatur’s perspective. He worked hard. He got the career he wanted. He earned the money he dreamed of. He built the life he had always imagined. By his definition, the mission was accomplished. Rancho succeeded. Chatur succeeded. They just solved different question papers. Some people dream of changing the world. Some dream of financial security. Some want research. Some want peace. Some want a government job. Some want a farmhouse in the mountains with no Wi-Fi. Who exactly decided that only one of these counts as success? My teacher probably still believes that he taught us an important lesson that day. Ironically, he did. Just not the one he intended. The best lesson from 3 Idiots isn’t "Be Rancho." It’s that success becomes dangerous the moment you start measuring your life with someone else’s ruler.
