Nizhalkuthu

The award-winning and powerful Malayalam film Nizhalkuthu (2002), written and directed by the legendary Adoor Gopalakrishnan, stars Oduvil Unnikrishnan, Sukumari, Nedumudi Venu, Murali, Narain, Mallika, among others.

The story unfolds in the 1940s in the princely state of Travancore, where Kaliyappan (Oduvil Unnikrishnan) serves as the last surviving hangman of the state. His grim duty is to carry out executions, after which he burns the rope and uses the ash as a healing remedy for villagers — a paradoxical blending of death and life.

Haunted by guilt, Kaliyappan confesses that his most recent execution was unjust — he is convinced the boy he hanged was innocent. At home, he lives with his wife Marakatam (Sukumari), son Muthu (Narain), and daughter Mallika (Mallika). Just as Mallika’s coming-of-age is celebrated with grandeur, news arrives from the royal household summoning him for another execution. Meanwhile, his elder daughter Madhavy (Thara Kalyan) and son-in-law Vasu (Murali) visit, with Vasu casting a lustful eye on young Mallika.

Though frail and ailing, Kaliyappan sets off for the execution, accompanied by his son Muthu. By custom, the hangman must remain awake through the night before a hanging. To pass the time, the Jailer (Nedumudi Venu) recounts a tragic tale: a young girl falls in love with a flute-playing boy, but her brother-in-law rapes and murders her. The flute found at the crime scene makes the boy the prime suspect. The jailer chillingly reveals that the boy awaiting Kaliyappan’s noose is that very innocent youth.

Oduvil Unnikrishnan delivers one of the finest performances of his career, portraying Kaliyappan as a weary, meditative, and tormented man. Ilaiyaraaja’s music beautifully captures the rhythms of village life, while the hangman’s noose becomes a powerful symbol — an instrument of death that paradoxically transforms into ashes of healing.

Nizhalkuthu is a profound and thought-provoking meditation on life, death, guilt, and redemption, crafted with the quiet brilliance of Adoor Gopalakrishnan. The film won several accolades, including the prestigious FIPRESCI Award. IMDB 7/10
