I always thought I could imagine how Indians felt under British rule when India was not a free country before 1947. My grandparents lived through those years and their stories carried the weight of oppression, silence and resistance. They spoke of a time when every breath was monitored, every step shadowed and every dream chained. Today I realise that what they endured is not just history. It is a mirror held up to our present where the current fascist regime has begun to resemble the same suffocating control.

The universe seemed to etch my thought somewhere and India has become more fascist day by day. Everything that was built by Congress during its years of governance brick by brick is being destroyed brick by brick. Institutions that once stood tall as guardians of democracy are now bent to serve power. The spirit of freedom that was nurtured after 1947 is being strangled leaving us gasping for air.

When Rahul Gandhi spoke at the INDIA Alliance meeting on 8 June 2026, his words carried the weight of history and the urgency of the present, reminding the nation that resistance is not rebellion but survival.

The victim is thrown behind bars while rapists are garlanded. Votes are stolen. Paper leaks reach staggering numbers. Unemployment and poverty sink to abysmal lows. Disrespect, profanity, violence, corruption and scams rise to another level. Every institution from government bodies to the film industry is captured and forced to obey commands. India is literally in a rut.

The youth of our country have been made lazy. They eat, get entertained and sleep. Hope seems extinguished. Political parties appear like new business entrants who know nothing about the people they claim to serve. They compete without understanding the psyche of the region, offering freebies and hollow promises. The gamechanger in Indian politics has become money and with it comes the complete violation of our election system. The sanctity of democracy is trampled underfoot.

The Hollow Applause

And here lies a bitter truth. People who never participated in India’s freedom struggle, who never contributed in any way, clap for the current government because they do not understand sacrifice. They do not know what it means to love the nation without reward, to be patriotic without reason, to be true to the country even when it costs everything. Their applause is hollow, their cheer is ignorance and their blindness is dangerous. For them freedom was handed down without effort so they cannot feel the pain of losing it.

Regional Parties and Ration Politics

For all the regional parties, what is your contribution if you make the citizen your slave. You place yourself above and beyond criticism. You do not let people strive towards earning and succeeding if you hand them five kilograms of ration. How will you make the youth dream and work hard to reach their goals. Why is critical thinking ignored, why are competitions neglected, why is education not prioritised. Why are government schools shut down. Why are innumerable distractions created to keep minds occupied and away from truth. A nation cannot rise on ration alone, it rises on the dreams of its youth, on the strength of its education, on the courage of its people.

The Legal Truth

No government can be one hundred per cent clean or honest because it cannot control every act of its representatives. But what we see now is not imperfection, it is deliberate decay. Every political party around the world takes the levy of being in power but it should be little, not as vast as donating all government institutions to capitalists and making them favourites. Power should serve the people, not turn into generational wealth for a few. This is not a violation of law to say, it is a citizen’s right to criticise government policies and demand accountability. The Constitution of India guarantees freedom of speech and expression. To speak against corruption, authoritarianism and injustice is not sedition, it is patriotism.

The Parallel with British Rule

India today feels like it did before 1947, not under foreign rule but under a regime that treats its own people as subjects. The youth are lulled into sleep, the poor are silenced and the educated are mocked. The government’s hand reaches into every corner of life not to guide but to grip. It is as if the rotisserie of control turns endlessly cooking every side of the Indian mind until no thought remains raw. This is the same suffocation my grandparents described when British officers dictated every aspect of life, from salt to speech, from land to liberty. The similarity is chilling. Then it was foreign rulers, now it is elected rulers who behave like masters.

The Hope of Congress

But there is hope. The same flame that burned in our grandparents’ hearts still flickers. The Congress Party with its legacy of building India brick by brick during its years of governance stands as the keeper of that flame. Every brick destroyed today can be rebuilt tomorrow with truth, compassion and unity. Congress gave India its institutions, its universities, its industries, its democracy. Those years of governance were not perfect but they were years of construction not destruction. Today as those bricks are torn down we must remember who laid them and why.

The Call to Patriotism

Patriotism is not blind loyalty. It is love for the country, for its people, for its future. To love India is to stand against those who seek to enslave it again. To honour Congress is to honour the struggle that gave us freedom and to defend the values that keep us free. Let trust in Congress and love for our country rise in our hearts not as nostalgia but as a living force. India belongs to us and together we will reclaim it from those who have no love for the nation and its people.
